Jade swallowed, her mouth suddenly dry. Why was she freezing up? She was the kind of person who thrived in high-pressure situations. Exams, job interviews, presentations—she could handle them in her sleep. So why was this woman turning her into a stammering mess?
Tina leaned in, not noticing—or caring—that Jade cringed back from her. “How about you and I go have some fun? The private rooms might be closed, but we can still play out here.”
Jade took a step back, hitting the wall behind her. “I-I’m not interested.”
“Don’t play coy with me. You come here tonight, dressed in that sexy little number, and you’re not up for having a little fun?” The woman put her hand on the wall next to Jade’s headand leaned close, her alcohol-tinged breath hot on Jade’s neck. “Come on, kitten. I know what you really want.”
Jade’s skin crawled. She didn’t want this. All she wanted was this woman gone.
Her hands curled into fists at her sides. She straightened up, looking the woman in the eye. “I saidno. So leave me alone!”
The woman flinched. But a moment later, a smirk crossed her lips. “Oh, a feisty one. I like that even more.”
Jade’s stomach sank. This woman wasn’t going to leave her alone. And she was taller than Jade, stronger than her, and they were in a darkened corner of the club, away from everyone else. Tina had her trapped. She couldn’t move, couldn’t breathe—
“Get away from her.” A woman’s voice, rising over the music and the hum of the crowd. “Now.”
CHAPTER 2
Jade’s heart skipped.That voice. Who?
She looked over Tina’s shoulder. Standing behind her was another woman, statuesque and commanding, her ice-blonde hair flowing down her shoulders. Diamond earrings adorned her ears, and she wore a short but elegant black dress with a deep V neckline, her ruby-red heels the same color as her lips.
And her eyes. In the dim light of the club, her amber eyes shone like gold, piercing into Tina.
Tina looked the blonde woman up and down, then cocked her head at Jade. “This your girl?”
“It doesn’t matter if she is or not.” That voice again, clear and sharp, cold as frost. “She saidno. You understand whatnomeans, don’t you?”
Tina took a step back from Jade. “Look, lady—”
“It’s a simple question.No.Do you understand the word?”
“Yes, but—”
The woman’s gaze darkened. “Then why are you still here?”
Tina folded her arms across her chest. “Just who do you think you are?”
“Someone you don’t want to cross. So I suggest you leave this club right now and never come back.”
Tina scoffed. “Are you serious?”
“Do I look like I’m joking?”
Tina glanced between Jade and the other woman as if Jade would share her disbelief. But Jade only crossed her arms, saying nothing.
The blonde woman stepped between them, locking eyes with Tina in an unyielding glare.
“Leave,” she said.
Tina stared back at her with narrowed eyes. Jade held her breath as neither woman moved or spoke.
Until Tina turned on her heel and walked away, pushing through the crowd and disappearing out the door to the club.
Jade let out a breath. Tina was gone. But in her place was the woman who had scared her off with nothing more than a few words and a look.
And right now, her gaze was fixed on Jade.
