Renee raised an eyebrow. “You weren’t kidding about this woman being strict.”

“Oh, she’s strict, all right.”

Strict. Disciplined. Oh so commanding. And every time Simone gave Jade an order, she’d go weak at the knees, her mind filling with thoughts of Simone ordering her to do entirely unprofessional things. And what Simone had said to her before she left for lunch had only made those thoughts worse.

Good girl.Had Simone really said those words? Had Jade imagined it?

Why had it made her feel hot all over?

“I don’t get it,” Renee said. “If she’s such an asshole, why do you want to work for her so badly?”

Jade swallowed her mouthful of sandwich. “She’s not an asshole. She has high expectations, that’s all. And that’s how she became one of the most successful businesswomen in the country in the first place. That’s why I wanted to work for her. I’m getting a real behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to run a company like hers. And that kind of experience is priceless.”

After all, Jade didn’t want to be an assistant forever. She had bigger goals. She was going to climb the ladder, just like Simone had. And one day, she would start her own company, just like Simone.

But she had to start from the bottom. And working for Simone, learning from the very best, was the perfect first step. While the job was only temporary, it would give Jade the foundation she needed to build a career of her own.

“Well, I hope it’s worth it,” Renee said.

“So do I. Because honestly, I’m starting to wonder if working for her was a mistake. Not because she’s so strict, but because, well…”

Jade hesitated. She hadn’t told Renee about Simone and the woman from Club Velvet being the same person. She’d been so busy with her new job that they’d barely spoken at all.

“Because what?” Renee asked. “What aren’t you telling me?”

“It’s a little crazy.” Jade took a long, slow sip of her coffee. “You know that woman I was talking to at Club Velvet the other night?”

“You mean the hot blonde Amazon?”

“Yeah, her. You’re not going to believe this, but that was Simone. Simone Weiss.”

Renee’s eyes widened. “You mean your newboss?”

Jade nodded. “I didn’t realize it was her until the interview.”

“You’re kidding. What are the chances of that?”

“I don’t know, but I don’t exactly feel lucky. I’m stuck spending ten hours a day with this woman who gets me all hot and flustered just by looking at me.”

Renee smirked. “So she’s your type, huh? I figured as much. Especially after watching you drool over all the Dommes at Club Velvet.”

“It’s not like that, Ree. And I wasn’t drooling over anyone. I’m not into that kind of thing. And even if I was, my boss would be the last person I’d want to do that with.”

“Uh-huh. Then why are you blushing right now?”

Jade folded her arms across her chest. She didn’t have a retort for that. Because Renee was right. Jadewasinto that kind of thing. Or at the very least, she was curious. She had been ever since Simone had offered to show her the ropes at Club Velvet.

For a moment, a tantalizing image of Simone binding her up in ropes, leaving her powerless, helpless, flashed behind her eyes. And with it came Simone’s words from just minutes ago, echoing through her mind, reverberating through her body, all the way down to her core—

“Hello?” Renee said. “Are you even listening to me?”

Jade nodded. “Sorry, I’m all over the place right now. And not just because of Simone.”

“Is everything okay?”

“I’ve just got my hands full at the moment. This new job is really intense, which I can handle, but it’s an adjustment. And it doesn’t leave me with much time to deal with everything else that’s going on right now. Like my car. It’s making weird noises, but I can’t afford to take it to a mechanic until I get my first paycheck. But that’s earmarked for all the other bills that are already piling up. Oh, and I’ve spent the entire week trying to get my landlord to fix this leak in the ceiling of my studio, but he’s ignoring my calls. And I haven’t had a chance to chase him upbecause it’s like I’m working every day from the moment I wake up to the moment I go to sleep!”

“Wow,” Renee said. “That’s a lot.”
