Leah takes another bite of her food and then looks at the door. “That sounds nice, thank you, but I need to get back to work. I’m happy about the sales, though.”
She slinks around me, and when our arms brush, electricity shoots through me.
Still.
Even after all that’s happened between us.
Maybe Owen is right, and I do have my panties in a bunch because I want to be with Leah.
Except it’s not like he thinks it is. I’m not looking to be a family man. I want the fun, confident woman I spent that first night with. Unfortunately, she’s gone. She’s about to become a mother and take on a whole new life.
And here I am, being a little pussy about it.
“She’s happy about it.”
“Huh?” I blink at Taylor, having completely forgotten that she’s here.
“She’s happy about it.” She stirs honey into her tea. “Even if she doesn’t say it. GourmetGlobal is her everything.” She smiles slightly. “Well… used to be her everything. It’s more like number two now.”
The babies. Exactly.
I was right. She’s a different person than the one I met. That’s why I’m having such a tough time. It’s hard to let go of the person I briefly knew her as.
I nod. “Everyone on the team should be proud, yourself included.”
She shrugs like it’s no big deal, and then we’re just left standing there. Awkwardly.
I clear my throat. “Have a good night.”
“You, too.”
I’m out of the break room and heading back to my office in the blink of an eye. God, that was fucking uncomfortable. I felt like a teenage boy standing in the cafeteria in front of his crush and her friends.
And I didn’t like it.
Damn Leah. No matter how confident I am, she still has this way of making me come undone.
Well, I tried. It seems we’re just not meant to be around each other. I’ll still find her the new home, of course. I’ll pay for it too, as a thank-you for all her work.
And then I’ll finally wash my hands of her. We’ll be nothing more than boss and employee.
Nothing more. Nothing less.
CHAPTER23
LEAH
My GPS directs me deeper into the bougie neighborhood, where old oaks tower over two-story homes and big yards.
It’s an adorable area, with kids playing free range on the sidewalks and yoga moms walking dogs. There’s a community pool and an event center. A gate with a security guard.
So why did Jack ask me to meet him here?
“You’ve arrived at your destination,” my GPS sings out.
I stop the car in front of a brick house with a short fence around the yard. O-kay. This is really getting weird.
Grabbing my purse, I go about the laborious task of getting out of the car. Six months pregnant with triplets is something else. I feel huge and bloated all the time, and my energy levels just aren’t the same.
