“My God, you are stunning,” Phoebe said, leaning her head in her hand, staring at me.
Blushing, I whispered, “Thank you.”
“Definitely prettier than Dimeter. That’s for sure.” Freyja smirked.
“Dimeter?”
“Sorry.” Freyja grinned. “It’s Scribe’s birth name. Dimeter Malpas.”
“He never said. I just know him as Scribe.”
“Yeah, yeah...” Bailey scoffed, rolling her eyes. “Enough small talk. I want the deets. We know he’s kissed you, but has he done the deed?”
Confused, I looked at the stunning woman.
“What?”
“You know. Declared that you belong to him.”
“I don’t understand.”
Skylar shook her head, leaning forward. “What Bailey is trying to ask is, has Scribe formally claimed you? It’s what the brothers do when they find their woman. When they know she’s the one, they claim her.”
“Uh.” I looked over my shoulder at Scribe, who was in deep conversation with King, Pyro and Priest. Turning back to the woman, I muttered, “Well, before he kissed me, he said he was claiming me. But I didn’t know what he meant by that. Then everything evaporated when he kissed me. Everything’s been a blur since.”
“Fucking figures.” Bailey groaned, leaning back in her chair. “Rat bastards. Why do they think if they can kiss us stupid, we will just fall at their feet and do what they want?”
“Because they know they can kiss us stupid,” Skylar retorted, chuckling. “Are you telling me that King doesn’t make you forget the world when he kisses you?”
“Nope. Not saying that. My man can make me forget colors.”
The women laughed.
Chapter Nineteen
Scribe
“We’ve got another player,” I said, looking at King. “Henley told me she overheard the mayor talking to someone this morning before she left. Whoever this motherfucker is, I’m betting he’s the one who threatened her.”
“What do you mean, threatened her?”
“Before Sarah went into labor, Henley called me upset. Someone called her and threatened to kill her. She’s gonna need to stay here until we get this shit sorted.”
“He’s right, King,” Frank said, walking over. “I saw Henley at the lake. She was upset. She’d been there a while when I approached. Scribe’s girl is sweet. I like her.”
“She say who this fucker was?”
I shook my head. “Just that the voice was familiar.”
“A local, maybe?” Pyro questioned.
“We need eyes and ears in that place. I don’t like this. Too many players. We need to narrow this shit down fast before it gets out of control.” King sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “We also need to get Devlyn up here. If someone is looking for Henley, they won’t think twice before going after her sister.”
Pyro added, “Plus, Devlyn knows most of the players. We can get her to make us a list.”
“Pyro, take Frank and go get Devlyn. I want her locked down here with Henley,” King ordered, as both brothers nodded before walking away. Turning to me, he asked, “Scribe, you claim your woman yet?”
I nodded. “Yeah. I said the words, but not formally. She’s scared enough already. I don’t want to pile it on.”
