“NO!” I shouted, leaping towards them both just before Don Amato pulled the trigger. “Don’t.” I calmly said, even though everything inside me was shaking. “She doesn’t deserve to haunt you. She deserves to live knowing that she lost everything she ever held dear.”

I was staring down the barrel of Mr. Amato’s gun, switching between the weapon and his tear-filled eyes.

“She killed Amelia. She killed Amanda. She almost killed you.”

“Yet, here I am, because you saved me.”

I motioned for Mike to take her away, drawing confidence from the smile that spread Liam’s face as he looked at me. I placed my hand over the gun Don Amato held up, slowly lowering his hand. The man was a mess, all the power he exuded reduced to shambles and pain.

“You were waiting for me? You actually wanted to meet me?” I asked, making sure I wasn’t in for yet another heartbreak.

“My God, yes!” He replied, finally looking me in the eye. “I’m sorry this was how you found out. But I’m your father, dear, and it would mean the world to me if you gave me the chance to get to know you.”

Those words made my heart leap while goosebumps covered my skin. My real father was right in front of me, risking his life to save me, seemingly happy to see me despite everything. I closed my eyes, relishing in the touch of his hand on my cheek, thinking that now I finally had it all.

A new stream of tears sprung free, this time filled with happiness as I hugged my father tightly, feeling complete for the first time in my life.

Chapter 46

Jamie

A week later

“Where are you taking me?”

Liam was being as mysterious as ever. I had asked him a thousand times before where we were going, but he didn’t give in to any of my attempts.

“Be patient. You’ll find out soon enough.”

I sighed, sinking deeper into the lush seat of his Maybach while he drove us around town.

It wasn’t exactly a smooth ride, but meeting Liam all those months ago was the best thing that happened to me.

A perfect life awaited me, and I knew that whatever came our way, I always had a hand to hold and a companion to walk alongside me.

For the first time in my life, I had a family. A father who was making a true effort to get to know me and have me in his life. Alison, my soon-to-be sister, whom I adored to the moon and back. A cousin that I was looking forward to getting to know, and a whole lot of people willing to risk their lives to save my own.

I was in a place I never thought I would ever be in. An extremely happy place. I loved these people around me, and I was loved in return.

“I need to make a quick stop. I’ll be right back.”

Without giving me time to speak, Liam jumped out of the car and disappeared into a coffee shop on the other side of the road. He was only in there for a minute, and before I knew it, he was opening the passenger door and offering me his hand to help me out of the car.

“If you please, Miss Amato.”

I smiled at his choice of words. Pride filled my chest each time I heard it because it meant something more. I was wanted.

Taking his hand, I stepped out of the car, noticing the paper coffee cup Liam held in his other hand.

“Now can you tell me where we are going?”

“Just a few more steps and I can tell you.”

I rolled my eyes at that, earning a harsh tug that had me colliding right into Liam’s chest.

“Do that again and you’ll be in trouble, Smallville.”

I frowned at the reference before it hit me.
