Page 828 of Not Over You

She’s quiet at first as she stares at the ring. Then she looks around the restaurant at all the people staring at us. I’m nervous because she hasn’t answered yet. But finally, with a tear sliding down her cheek, she smiles at me and answers, “Yes.”

One Year Later

I carefully lift the box in front of me, but Jaxon rushes over. “You shouldn’t be lifting that.”

“I’m pregnant, not handicapped.”

“Still, the doctor said to take it easy.”

“How can I take it easy when I have so much to do?”

I look around the empty building, and a headache forms just thinking about my grand opening next weekend. The walls still need to be painted. My equipment hasn’t arrived. And my liquor license is taking forever to clear. Jaxon senses my stress. “Hey, it’s going to be okay.”

Kenzie stops sweeping the floor. “He’s right, Kai. Everything is going to be okay. You just follow your doctor’s orders and relax. We got this.”

I take a seat in a nearby booth and place my hand on my swollen belly. This past year has been a whirlwind. Jaxon reconciled with his family, and I finally got a chance to meet his parents. My parents were thrilled to learn that we had reconnected. Summer’s parents were adamant about paying Jaxon back for any expenses he paid out of pocket to help with her medical care. At first, he didn’t want to accept, but I told him he should. Especially since they had the money to help all along and flat out refused. If they had helped, he wouldn’t have had to spend his money in the first place. Turns out it was enough to help him expand his auto shop. I won that food contest and was awarded the grant to start my own restaurant. And we found out we’re pregnant. It’s not my ideal order of things. I would have preferred for us to be married first and then have the baby, but I found out I was pregnant while wedding planning, and I didn’t want to walk down the aisle with a big belly. So, we pushed the wedding back another year. Jaxon kneels in front of me and kisses my baby bump. “Do you need anything? Water? Food?”

I shake my head. “No.” I look around my building, then over to Kenzie, and back at him. “I have everything I need.”
