Sebastian wiped a hand down his face. “Fuck.” She must have heard them talk about the raid they were involved in. But why did she run? He thought it might just bring them closer together because they’d gone through a terrible time and had come out stronger.

“What happened?” Lacey asked.

“I was there when we raided the place Sage was held in.”

“Oh, wow.”

Cason squeezed her shoulders. “What, Baby?”

“If it were me and my daddy, I’d feel weird about it. She was in rough shape when she came here. The thought of you seeing her that way is probably upsetting to her.”

“You really think that’s it?” Sebastian asked.

Lacey shrugged. “It might be. But we were talking about babies the other day, and she got all quiet.”

The few times they talked about their future, he had brought up children, but she always had an excuse not to talk about it. He hadn’t caught it, and now he thought there was more to that, too. It was something else that they would have to resolve.

Cason’s phone rang.

“Yes. Okay, good. Thank you, Devon,” Cason said. He turned to Sebastian. “Devon said she went into her old apartment upstairs.”

“Why would she do that? Everything of hers is in our place now.”

Cason exhaled. “I’m not sure, but he also said he saw her come out of the room the littles were in and raced down a few hallways until she stood outside your door. She listened for a moment, turned, and raced toward the elevator. He could tell she was upset.”

“Then it was because she heard us. Fuck.” Sebastian turned his back to them and stared out his window.

“You can fix this, Sebby,” Lacey said.

He looked at her over his shoulder. “Oh, I know that. I just hate the fact that she’s feeling pain and alone.”

Lacey leaned against Cason and nodded. “My money is on you.”

Both men chuckled.

“Thank you for the vote of confidence. I can use all the help I can get,” Sebastian said.

“Do you remember her code?” Cason asked.

Sebastian nodded. “Yes. I need to go to her.”

“Absolutely. We’ll talk later.” Cason turned and led Lacey out of the office.

Sebastian turned off all the lights and headed for the elevator. He wasn’t going to waste another moment without his little one in his arms.

On the sixth floor, he went to Sage’s old apartment and let himself in. He listened for a bit and heard nothing. The lights were off, and he knew how much Sage hated the dark, so he was concerned when she hadn’t turned one on.

He let his eyes adjust to the dark, but it helped that enough light was coming in through the window from the streetlamp.

Sebastian made his way into the master bedroom. He caught the sound of fabric rubbing against the carpet and knew it was coming from the closet. He was clueless about how to deal with the situation, so he went with his gut. He turned on the light in the bathroom and sat on the edge of the mattress.

“Sage. I need you to come to me, please.”

Nothing.

“Sweetheart, you’ve scared your daddy, and he wants to know why.”

Still no movement.
