But her life crashed into a nightmare she never thought she’d have to deal with. How could he look at her and not think about that time? There were so many men walking around, and it took all her strength not to freak out.

Sage had no idea what man carried her out. She knew it wasn’t Sebastian. But now she knew he had witnessed her distress and suffering at its worst. She buried her face in her hands and sobbed until she couldn’t anymore. She used her shirt to wipe her tears and nose.

Sage had to decide on her next step. She wished she never heard their discussion and stayed oblivious. She also wished she didn’t have to see him anytime soon because she would imagine he remembered her when she was close to giving up and dying. She never thought she’d ever be rescued, so she thought her fate and life were at an end.

She couldn’t go to Lacey because her daddy would tell Sebastian. She couldn’t go to any of the littles she’d made friends with because the men all knew each other in some way.

So, besides not having a refuge to go to, she didn’t have any money, and the banks were all closed, or a place to hide in the city. It was also starting to get dark outside, and she knew she wouldn’t be able to leave the building by herself. Her fear of the dark still had a hold of her. It was getting better, but not enough that she could leave the building on her own.

Sage would rest until an idea came to her. The one thing she knew she’d have to eventually deal with was telling him she no longer wanted to be with him. She couldn’t see that it would ever be the same between them, and she wasn’t going to hold onto him when he could find a little that was whole and not damaged. After the sex they had the night before, it would be hard for him to accept it, and she knew he’d fight it.

At that moment, she had nothing in her to be able to deal with him. Maybe if she rested for a bit, she could make a decision.

Her phone rang, making her jump. She pulled it out of her pocket and looked at the screen. Sebastian was calling her. There was a temptation to answer, but she wouldn’t know what to say, and her thoughts were still in turmoil. So, until she could give him steady answers, she would not talk to him.

For the next hour, the phone rang several times. He left voicemails, and with every one of them, he got more distressed and angrier. She hated that she was upsetting him, but she knew she wasn’t strong enough to deal with it right then.

Chapter Seventeen

Sebastian paced back and forth as he called his little again. He was going to freak out if he didn’t hear her voice in the next ten minutes.

Cason rushed in. “Have you found her?”

Sebastian shook his head and hung up. “No. Cason, please tell me someone can’t come into the building and kidnap a woman.”

“It’s impossible. We’ve gone beyond the standard for protection because of what we do. She’s in the building.”

He relaxed a bit and tried to call her again.

“Fuck. Let me call Devon and have him check the monitors,” Cason said.

Sebastian kept up pacing and calling all the little daddies. Maybe one of the girls knew something.

Lacey walked in and went directly over to Cason, who wrapped his arm around her.

“Are you sure she didn’t say anything?” Sebastian asked.

“Yes, I’m sure. I can’t imagine where she’d be.” Lacey wiped a tear from her cheek. “She was so happy this afternoon. She wanted to get to you as soon as she could.”

Sebastian stopped and faced her. “What time was that?”

“Around three-thirty, I think,” Lacey said.

Sebastian looked at Cason and then back at Lacey. “She was supposed to stay with you littles, until I came and got her at five.”

Lacey nodded. “She knew that, but she was so excited she couldn’t wait.”

“What was it about?” Cason asked.

“Sophia, that thirteen-year-old girl. They talked, and Sophia told Sage how happy she was and that she had been adopted into a large, loving family. I know she worried about the girl more than we knew she did.”

Sebastian did know how much she worried about the girl.

A horrible thought popped into his head. “Is that around the time we were talking about the raid I was involved with?” Sebastian asked the other man.

Cason thought about it for a moment and then nodded. “Yes. I had finished with my call from The House of Friends in Houston, Texas, that we are trying to open. I had come here, and we sat talking for a while.”

Sebastian thought about the new house Lacey and Cason were opening there. It was going so well, and would be open and ready to take women and children. They planned on putting several more in cities around the United States because it was really making a difference.
