“That’s what I’m here for, but it’s easy with her. She’s a sweet one.”
“Yes. I know that. I’ll be lucky if she lets me be part of her life,” he said.
“Oh, I think you’ll be surprised.” Carol patted his hand.
Sebastian waited until the front door closed before making his way into the bedroom. He saw her sitting up on the side of the bed with her back to him.
He inhaled and braced himself before walking in to face her. “Hi, Sweetheart. How are you feeling?”
She raised her head. “I want to apologize…”
He crouched in front of her and lay one of his hands over hers. “Don’t. There is absolutely nothing to apologize for.”
“I acted….”
“I don’t care if you acted like a monkey and swung around the room.”
He caught a slight smile and relaxed a little. “I’m just worried about you.”
Sage exhaled. “Carol said you were really upset.”
“More than upset, just worried about you. I never want to see you in that kind of pain again.”
“I don’t either. I felt like I was going to split apart because the feelings inside of me were so … massive and uncontrollable it scared me.”
“We’ll do everything in our power to prevent that from happening. I want you to see Carol every day for a month.”
Sage’s eyes widened. “A month?”
“Yes. I want to make sure you’re okay. I’m also going to set up picnics with the littles a few times a week.”
“Really?”
He smiled. “Yes. I think you all are magical and can make each other feel better quicker than anyone else.”
“So, I’m a little?” Sage asked.
“Yes, Sweetheart. You’remylittle.”
He saw the flush of pure joy on her face before she slipped from the bed onto his lap and wrapped her arms around his neck. He lifted her and sat back in the chair. He planned to hold her for as long as she needed.
He had no idea they both crashed. They were dozing off when she stirred.
“I need to potty…”
“You know what to call me.”
“Daddy?”
A happiness he never thought existed filled him. “Yes. I’m your daddy. Now, let’s get you to the toilet, and I’ll start the bath so I can wash you.”
“I’d like that.”
“Good,” he said. He walked her into the bathroom and set her down in front of the toilet. He made sure she was steady before releasing her.
He crouched by the tub and started the faucet. When he didn’t hear anything, he turned to check on her to see her standing in the same place.
“What’s wrong, Sweetheart?”
