Carol came over. “Why don’t you go? She’ll be awake in a minute.”
Sebastian nodded, stood, took one more look at Sage, and walked out.
For the next hour, he paced in the living room. He could hear them talking, but not the words, and Sage sometimes cried.
Finally, Carol came out with her bag. The look on her face was grim and just made him more anxious.
“What happened?” he asked.
Carol shook her head. “She told me I could talk about it. I’m happy about that because I want both those fuckers put away.”
“Who?”
“Her father and fiancé. They were the ones that set her up to be abducted,” Carol said.
He was more than shocked and couldn’t fathom why anyone would do that, especially to their own family. He was going to do everything in his power to convict the two. He’d pull in every favor if he had to.
“D … does she know why?” he asked.
“Her fiancé, the one who visited her today, told her it was because her father wanted her money, and he, the fiancé, wanted her gone. He never did want her, but her father was going to pay him to marry her, and then he’d have control of her money.”
“Are you fucking kidding me?”
Carol shook her head. “I’m afraid not.”
“Is the guy gay?”
“She doesn’t know. She does know he does not like fat women.”
Sebastian’s face darkened. “I want my hands around his neck.”
“I do, too. He made her feel self-conscious for the first time in her life. She was only a size ten, for God’s sake. I guess he wanted her a size two.”
“Jesus, the guy needs to be beaten.”
“I agree.”
“What happens now?” he asked.
“We’re planning on getting together every day for a while. I know I won’t rest easy until I see her smile, which was rare anyway.”
Sebastian nodded. “What should I do?”
“I think she’ll hear what you want to say now. I told her already, and she understands she might have misinterpreted what was happening.”
“That’s good.”
“Just take it slow. Her emotions will be all over the place for a while.”
“I’ll be careful.”
“Don’t be afraid to touch her. She needs all the loving she can get.”
“That will be easy to do.”
“I have to go. Call this number if you have a question.” She handed him the card.
“Thank you so much for coming,” Sebastian said.
