“Yeah?”
“He said—the lesson is that life is mostly random bullshit, so we should make it count for something. Keep those you care about close to you and do the things you love.”
Chase laughs through his tears, “I’ve never liked Dom, but that’s some pretty insightful shit.”
I laugh and more tears come out. I fan my face but it doesn’t stop. “I need to go to the ladies’ room. My eyeliner is probably making me look like a goth girl.”
Chase smiles at me with tears in his eyes too.
“I’ll be back.”
He nods.
I hurry past the tables with my head down so no one can see and let myself into the bathroom. The mirror reveals that…yes…I have streaks all over my face.
I clean up as best I can, blow my nose, drink some water and reapply my eyeliner so I don’t look like a goldfish that’s been dead for nine days.
When I come out of the ladies’, I can’t see Chase. I go to our table and there’s a twenty placed under the bowl of sugar.
I look across the street and his bike’s gone.
Wow…a five-day ride for twenty-minute conversation.
I sit down and pick up my coffee, then Dana comes over and hands me a letter, “He said to give you this, he also paid me twenty dollars to do it!”
“This twenty?”
“No.”
“You can have this one too then,” I take the letter and open it up:
Dearest Lara,
We all wanted to come, but I convinced everyone that I had the most to say.
I want you to know we all love you very much and that we only want the best for you.
You’ll get to decide what that is for yourself…and we’ll be there for you every step of the way.
I love you,
Chase.
P.S. There’s more than one way to be in this club. Your brother was proof of that. He saved us once…you did it a second time.
Well…how can you argue withthat?
Chapter Twenty-Nine
Lara
Life is mostly random bullshit, so we should make it count for something. Keep those you care about close to you and do the things you love.
The only meaning life has is the one that we give it.
Kinda makes sense, doesn’t it? That last bit could easily go on a coffee mug!
The next week is a bit of a process for me. The lease on my apartment isn’t up for a while, but I wasn’t about to leave without my security deposit…so I had to fight with the landlord till he caved to my demands.
