“Okay, thank you, Lara.”
God!
I almostrunout of the house. I’m going to call both Nick and Bret. Whoever answers first is going to have to fuck the ‘Chase’ off me quick!
Chapter Sixteen
Bret
A cloud hangs over us the entire ride back. We sleep under the stars as planned, but don’t talk much. When we wake in the morning, we wait at the halfway mark.
As soon as Nico tells us that Chase is on his way, we ride back to the clubhouse.
We don’t stay long though. We stow our gear and leave again—this time for a trip north.
We had to meet our contact with the IRA—The Irish Republican Army.
The meeting was a by-the-book standard affair. Dom takes us along to do the same thing we did with the Devil’s Horde—back him up and look mean.
I can’t stop thinking about Chase though.
He’s a fucking asshole, but had things really gotten to the point where Domneededto do that to him?
It raised another important question—if Dom can do that to Chase, a legacy member, could he do that to us too?
The answer, inmymind at least, was a resounding—yes.
There are still too many secrets and I’m beginning to feel like one man shouldn’t hold all the keys to this operation without any oversight.
I trust Dom implicitly, but blind faith in the wrong leader can lead to disastrous consequences.
It’s not enough to hope he’s the right leader. I…or someone else…needs to hold him accountable.
There hasn’t been a vice president in this club for years! Maybe it’s time we remedied that situation.
When Lara called me last night and told me that she was with Chase, I was grateful that it washertreating him…and also ashamed I hadn’t stopped it from happening in the first place.
Dom says Chase needed it. Maybe that’s true, but if he doesn’t tell us why…there’s simply too much room for doubt.
I feel terrible that Iknowwhat happened to Chase but I’m not allowed to tell Lara about it.
It’s now 1pm, Lara is calling again…and I’m hesitant to pick up…but it’s Lara, so I do.
“Hey, what’s up?”
“Where are you right now?”
“I just got to the diner, I’m going to have some lunch.”
“Can I join you?”
“Of course.”
“Okay, wait for me, don’t order, I’ll be there in five minutes.”
