I can't help the laugh that springs free. “Oh, it's your turn to interrogate me now?”
“Just basic questions, I swear,” he shrugs, and I notice the ghost of a smile on his face.
“Okay,” I shut the door again and urge him to go ahead with a nod of my head. “I'm all ears.”
“So, here’s the thing,” he starts, scratching the top of his head as he tucks his other hand in the pocket of his black jeans. “There's this cop who is trying to pry his way into the murder case.”
I frown, and rub my hands. “Mm-hmm?”
“We could look into him, don’t you think?”
“Look into him? But that's not necessary.”
Marcus shakes his head, pushes his other hand into his pocket and slowly walks backwards, with his eyes still trained on me. “These cases are pretty sensitive, Detective. I think we should take all necessary precautions.”
“Fine, then. We will. I'll run a background check as well as look into some other things. Just to be sure that we’re working with an ally, right?”
“Right,” he nods, and the grin returns to his face. “And one last thing, Officer…”
“Yes, Marcus?” I flash an overly sweet smile.
He doesn't say anything, but just stands there staring. Our eyes are locked until he snaps out of it a brief moment later.
“Nothing,” he smiles, his blue eyes boring into mine with an overwhelming intensity. “I just wanted to capture your image one last time before walking away. You're fine, Jane. And very soon, I’ll make you mine.”
Huh?
I am rendered speechless and he appears to enjoy my silence.
“Sweet dreams, Detective,” he waves a hand and turns away, leaving me alone to wonder why the thought of being his doesn’t sound so bad.
Chapter Six
Marcus
“Kill the cop if she tries anything stupid.”
We’re at the club and the music is muted in our private booth. My blood curdles and my heart begins to beat at an accelerated rate.Kill.I’ve heard that word so many times that now it sounds like any other word to me. I’ve ended many lives so getting an order to kill a potential rival shouldn’t make my hands sweaty, but it does.
And that’s because the woman he is asking me to kill is Jane Sullivan. The same woman I’ve been jerking off to for the past couple of days.
I’m a very practical person, which means feelings and emotions don’t matter to me. All my life, and as the underboss of the Cosa Nostra, I’ve always walked the line of what is good for the family and what is not.
There was only one option when anything wasn’t good—eliminate it.
With Jane though, it’s different.
Maybe because I’ve been thinking of all the positions I could put her in. Imagining all the ways I’ll tear off her suit and let her dig her heels in my back as I fuck her. I haven’t had the opportunity to do that yet, and maybe that is why I can’t stop thinking of her.
Maybe that is why eliminating her makes my pulse skyrocket.
“I’ve been keeping an eye on her,” I tell my brother, hoping he won’t notice how hard I am breathing right now. “She’s no cause for concern to us right now.”
“She’s a cop, Marcus. And one we cannot bribe.” I have no idea if it’s the flickering lights in the club where we’re seated, butthe murderous look in his eyes makes the hair at the back of my neck stand on end. “Get rid of her when the time comes.”
I swallow and hesitate to answer. It’s something I’ve never done.
Although Dominic is my brother, he is still Capo and I owe him as much respect as everyone else in the family does. I’ve never gone against his orders. I’ve always been ready to do whatever he asks, but I’m reluctant to carry out this order for some reason.
