“No.” He began, sitting up, “That’s why I came. It’s been difficult trying to reach her for the past few days. I worried she might be sick and decided to come here and see why she is not taking my calls.”

“You didn’t care about my reaction, huh?”

The Minister turned to me and frowned. “I was a bit bothered at first, but I would have regretted not trying to know what’s up with her more, so here I am.”

“You like my sister?”

“Yeah, I do.” He replied immediately, sipping his wine. “Wouldn’t be here if I didn’t.”

“What are you doing here?” A familiar female voice said. When we turned and looked at my sister, she was frowning and had her hands folded.

“There you are,” Phil said as he stood and dug his hands into his pants.

“I told you not to come here and that I would meet you when I wanted to.”

“That was four days ago,” Phil replied with a shrug, “You can’t blame a man for wanting to know what’s going on when a woman he likes stops responding to his texts or taking his calls.”

“I think,” I stood and sipped more of my wine, “There are things that are important that need my attention inside,” I muttered and began to head in but not before making eye contact with my sister.

I headed inside, and just then, Ella’s voice raised as I made my way toward my room.

I was about to turn when Mom appeared and walked toward me with a look of concern. “Was that Ella’s voice I just heard outside?”

“Yes, it was.”

“She’s . . .” Mom began, trying to move close to her, but I held her arm, stopping her. “What are you doing, son?”

“It’s a personal matter.”

“What? Personal? Ella?” Mom asked, bewildered. “What type of personal matter?”

“Just let it be,” I replied with a nod. “I am sure she will fill you in later.”

“Fill me in? On what?”

“Just give her a minute, Mom.”

“Who is she shouting at,” Mom asked as she looked outside. “Is that the Minister? He’s the people’s favorite, and the ladies in our club talk about him. Why is Ella yelling at him? You know, Meredith was talking about trying to get him to notice her eldest daughter.”

“Mom, just leave them be for a moment. If you must know, he says he is very fond of Ella. But Ella hadn’t taken his calls the last few days, so he came here to check on her.”

“That is very bold of him,” Mom said with her hands on her hips staring outside at the two of them.

“Yeah, it is.”

“You know, that’s what you should do with Lucy. I bet if you went back to her father’s place, there’s no way you will return without knowing where she is.”

“It’s not that simple.”

“Why not? You could tell them you didn’t know she was his daughter.”

“They saw me look at her picture before leaving, so they know.”

“Then swallow your pride, accept your mistakes, and crawl if need be. Just do anything you must do to get her back.”

“I will try my best.”

“I will come with you if you think that will be a better idea.”
