“I want you out of my house right this minute,” Paul pointed toward the door.

Fucking hell, I cursed in my head. James was right. The family was as thick-headed as they came.

I stood and ran my hands through my hair, frustrated. “I am willing to give you fifty million, sir. Why are you turning that down?”

“Because we value our history and heritage and won’t sell it off like hungry bastards. This is our home, and we will keep it until we die. And then our children and grandchildren will continue the legacy,” Paul replied.

I turned around and rubbed my hands together, trying to hide my frustration. Having my money thrown right to my face was not a pleasant feeling, not in the least.

I was about to turn towards them with another desperate offer when my face caught hers. Surprised, I paused in my movement and looked at the picture on the showcase slowly.

It was indeed her.

Lucy, fucking Lucy. She is the daughter of the man that I am trying to buy his farm from. The one that I fucked last night and took her virginity. This has got to be some sort of fucking joke, I thought to myself.

I moved closer to the image to look at it. She was carrying a trophy while kissing a medal too. Beside that was a family photo out in a field beside a horse. Lucy, and who I assume is her brother, sitting on the horse, while Mr. and Mrs. Edward stood beside them, all smiling big smiles.

I turned toward the couple and looked at her mother’s surprised reflection. No wonder she looked familiar when I first saw her.

Now everything made sense.

“Who is this?” I asked, pointing at the picture, aware of the answer even before they had to say it.

“That’s none of your fucking business. Now get the fuck out of my house before I make you,” Paul scoffed. “What does she have to do with this?”

“I—”

“You know what?” He continued, cutting me off. “I do not care for whatever you have to say, just leave my house immediately and don’t ever come back.”

“Not even for seventy?”

“Out of my house, now, or I call the cops.” He threatened, pointing at the door.

I chuckled and shook my head, “The cops? I am sure we have not gotten to that just yet.”

“Well, we have, and I will be damned if I allow you to continue to infest my home with your ego and disrespect me and my family.”

“I am sorry if I come off to you that way. I just want to have my company built in this place and nowhere else.”

“There is lots of land around here, so find someplace else. This family isn’t selling now, not ever.” He said and began to walk toward the front door. He paused when he reached the door. “As I said earlier, it’s not been a pleasure.” With that said, he opened the door and signaled for me to leave.

I turned toward Martha, who was smiling wearily. “I am sorry, but the place means a lot to us. Just as my husband said, we are prepared to keep the land and pass it down to future generations.”

I chuckled and began to reach for my sunglasses. “I doubt your son had the same vision as you guys.”

She smiled and turned towards the picture of her Lucy. “Luckily enough, our daughter takes very much after my husband and would ensure the land stays with us even when we are no longer here.”

“No kidding,” I said while straightening out my suit jacket and doing up the button while I walked through the front door. Leaving her quiet, calm mother to their son. Instead, she takes after her stubborn, quick-to-anger father. I could see now where Lucy’s fight came from.

A lost cause, this was.

I sighed as I put my hands in my pocket, took out my card, and extended it toward Martha. “All the same, you have heard my offer. This is my card just in case you guys change your mind. Take some time to think about it, talk it over, then give me a call.”

She smiled and dug her hands in her pants, “I am sorry, but I can’t accept that. We mean it when we say we won’t sell, not even for a hundred million.”

“Beautiful,” I whispered while putting the card back in my pocket. “Very beautiful.”

“Sorry you had a wasted flight, but it’s getting late. I think you should leave now if you want to catch another flight back.” She said gently.
