I looked at the air hostesses while Dave began to open the door. “I enjoyed your services as always.”
“Thank you, sir.” They said in perfect sync with perfect smiles.
I looked outside to see the sunny weather. I reached for my pocket, took out my sunglasses, and began to walk down the stairs heading toward the vehicles which were already waiting for me.
Philip came down from one and rubbed his palms together excitedly. “Welcome to Tennessee, sir.”
“Good job, Philip,” I stretched my hand to shake his. This is why I liked him, even with his many flaws. He always delivered, no matter how difficult it was. “Glad you could get this done.”
“I live to please, sir.” He said as he bent and gave a false bow while smiling. “Where are we going, sir?”
I took out a paper and handed it to him. “This location, we need to be fast. I don’t want to waste much time here as I have other important things to do at home.”
Philip nodded, looked at the paper, typed it in his phone, and turned back to hand the form to me. “Let’s hit the road.”
I reached for the door of the Escalade, and Philip rushed forward and opened it, and when I got inside, he closed it.
I took a quick breath, took out my phone, and opened the pictures of the couple holding hands and chattering. They looked like they were very much in love. It made me wonder if I would ever experience such love and affection for someone.
I stopped and closed the phone, throwing it beside me. The pictures and the thought of a future with a beautiful woman made me wary, making me question the kind of life I lived.
I might live and die alone unless I eventually find the one.
Immediately the picture of Lucy lying on my bed naked filled my mind, and I chuckled and shook my head.
That was pretty much impossible, or maybe it wasn’t. I adjusted on the soft leather seat and scratched my jaw, wondering if the thought of it was terrible.
She was beautiful, kind, not materialistic, and definitely not like my sister—a trust fund baby. Lucy was the type who didn’t care about money but about the fundamental values one had.
So far, I had done nothing but increase her hatred for the wealthy by constantly domineering myself over her, all except last night when I had her in my bed and broke her innocence.
I sat there, imagining that she had allowed me to be the one to do that even though we weren’t on the best of terms. Was she trying to tell me that she wanted me, or was she blinded by lust in those moments and threw reason out the window?
The latter made more sense because if not, she wouldn’t have tiptoed out of the room while I slept without leaving a note, and this morning she was acting as if I didn’t exist as I spoke with Ella and Mom.
I sighed and wiped my eyes, unable to understand why I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I took out my phone to check the time when the driver coughed and looked at me through the rearview mirror.
“We are almost there, Sir.” He muttered.
I nodded and looked at the phone again. After a moment, I locked the phone, kept it inside my pocket, and sat up while using my hands to brush my face, trying to get myself prepared to meet the Edwards.
Taking a deep breath, I looked out of the window and saw the family home. It was just like I had seen in the pictures James sent to me. “Here we are,” I whispered to myself as I began to adjust my suit and tie, ready to step down and do what I know how to do best.
*******
I stood outside the door and looked around the house, wondering if anyone was home. I had knocked three times and pressed the bell, but there was no response.
I turned and saw Philip and my driver chatting and turned back at the door with a frown.
I raised my hand to knock again when the door opened suddenly, and out came a young teen, probably eighteen, looking at me with a worried expression. He raised his head, saw the exotic vehicles, and swallowed hard before turning towards me.
“Can I help you, sir?” He asked, his voice a little shaky.
I removed my sunglasses and placed them in my breast pocket. “Hello, is this Mr. Edwards home?” I asked, raising my head to look him straight in the eyes.
“Yes.” He answered, his hand holding tightly at the door frame.
“Are your parents around?”
