But she shook her head and held my arm. “Don’t worry. It’s just a little issue.” She replied, her voice a little shaky.
“I am not actually here for the place, sir,” Mason said, his gaze not leaving mine, “In fact, I have chosen another location for it.”
“So, are you here to gloat over that?”
“You offered me a seat first the last time I came.”
“Not until we know about your sinister reason for coming to our home.”
“I was just trying to do what's right by my company.”
“By throwing your stupid money around, huh?” Dad countered.
“Can we go outside and talk privately?”
“The only person going outside is you. Leave my house this minute, Mr. Blackwood.”
Mason rubbed his forehead. “Please, sir. I would appreciate a moment of your time to explain why I am here.”
“I don’t care about your explanations. Just leave my house.”
Mason frowned and stretched to his full height, making him appear slightly taller than Dad. “As I said earlier, I am not here for your business, Mr. Edwards.”
“Then why are you here, Mr. Blackwood?”
“I am here because of your daughter, Lucy.”
Dad and Mom turned toward me with shock while I held myself tightly and the tears began to fall heavily.
“What about my daughter? She has nothing to do with this, so leave her out of it. Please, get out of my house before I make you leave myself,” Dad said angrily.
Without missing a beat, Mason’s eyes met mine. And by the way I looked back at him, my dad knew, in that moment, who the father of my baby was.
“So, it was you, you fucking beast,” Dad shouted as he lunged at Mason and punched him hard, startling everyone in the room.
“Dad!” I screamed, covering my mouth with fear.
“Honey.” Mom called out to him while holding me by my shoulder.
“I think I heard my friends calling me outside,” Joe muttered and ran out of the room.
I opened my eyes to find Mason touching the side of his mouth, where blood was slowly coming out. I closed my eyes and began to wonder if this was how we were going to lose it all if Mason pressed charges.
The case would be over even before it started. I opened my eyes to beg Mason, but I found him chuckling and looking at my dad, who still had his hand in a fist.
“I guess I deserved that,” Mason said reaching for a handkerchief in his pocket. “You know, you are the first man that has actually hit me.
His words calmed Dad down as he released his fist while my mother gripped my arm tightly.
“He’s joking, right?” Mom whispered, but I closed my mouth, unsure how to respond.
“But,” Mason continued as he used the handkerchief and wiped the side of his mouth, “As much as I may have deserved this, I don’t want that to happen again.”
“I want you out of my house right this minute,” Dad muttered after regaining his voice.
“I am here to talk to Lucy. She owes me that much.”
“I do not care, and she owes you nothing! Haven’t you already done enough? Get off my property right now.”
