“So, move on from it and let it go,” Mom said and gently patted me on the shoulder.

“But wait, you didn’t let me tell you the most important part,” I said with a little hesitation.

Mom could sense my hesitation and said, “Mason, what’s wrong?”

I knew this wasn’t going to go over well, but I just had to say it.

“Well, I had no idea initially, but the family I was trying to buy from, it’s Lucy’s family. Her family home, her parents, her brother, her family.”

“What? Mason, are you serious?” Mom asked glaring at me to see if I was pulling her leg or telling the truth.

I nodded my head in agreement, that I was indeed telling the truth.

“God, I can’t believe this. You do the wildest of things, son. You offer them an insane amount of money trying to buy their land, and now you have gotten his daughter pregnant. I am certain he will want to kill you now. I know I would!”

“Fuck, are you going to blame me for that? I didn’t even know it was her parents, for fucks sake. I realized it as I was sitting in their house and saw some of their family photos.”

“Who else is there to blame for it? You were the one who..” she hesitated to finish her sentence. “Well, you know now, now we must fix it. And I need to tell you, there are very few men in this world who are going to reject that amount. Especially now, given the circumstances, he will absolutely want to kill you. And trust me, those that are confident enough to reject the kind of money you offered, are as hard as they come.”

I raised my hand in defeat and turned away, “Of course, tell me about it.”

If her father got wind of this, there was no way he would agree to let me touch or see his daughter ever again. He would believe I got her pregnant to spite him, and that man was definitely not the kind of man I would want as an enemy.

I could see Mom’s face soften a little. She could tell that this was bothering me to no end, and not much bothered me.

“You have a lot in your hands, son. First, you are going to have to try to convince Lucy to agree to marry you, and then you have to make her father, whom you have tried to bargain for his family business, accept you to marry his daughter. I really do not envy you, son.”

Yeah, that was how fucked up my situation was. It was like I was in a movie that had no happy ending, as if I was fucked right from the get-go. I brushed my face with my hand and groaned in frustration. “I need to try my best, Mom. Last night, I dreamt my child was being taken away from me.”

“I bet you don’t need a psychic to interpret that for you, huh?”

I nodded and wiped my eyes again.

Have you guys told Ella about the relationship?”

I shook my head, “Not yet.”

“So, you do not just have Lucy’s parents to worry about?”

I groaned. “Mom, you are not making this any easier on me.”

Mom chuckled, “l am just trying to be rational.”

“This is funny to you. Really, Mom?”

“Yes, it is, I am not going to lie, you are in one big mess, my son, but I am going to see how I can help you walk through it without getting too scathed.”

“And that is?”

“First,” Mom began, stopping and looking at the main house, “we have to go see Ella and tell her immediately before someone else does. Trust me, she hates hearing second-hand information.”

“Yeah,” I nodded and turned toward the house. “How do you think she will take it?”

“Not pretty, I must say, but hopefully she comes around and sees reason that she is going to be an auntie. But first, tell me exactly how everything began.”

I muttered a sigh, shrugged, and followed my mother’s lead while I told her the story.
