I smiled and sat on the table just beside her bed, “How are you feeling now?”

Lucy turned and faced the ceiling. “About the pregnancy or my life choices?”

“Both, I suppose.”

“Health, cool, the other? Not very thrilling.”

“It’s your first time. They say the first time sucks.”

“Yeah,” She nodded and looked at me again. “I bet I would have to seek the help of my mom on how to handle it.”

“Would she agree to come here?”

“What?” She asked, turning toward me in surprise. “Who? My Mom? That’s the biggest joke I ever heard.”

“But why is it a joke? I think it’s a wonderful idea. I would have thought that having your mother by your side would be delightful for you.”

“I don’t care what you think. She, as well as my father, will surely be disappointed in me for getting pregnant. She wouldn’t agree to come, let alone stay, and neither will I. God, I feel like I am such a mess.”

“I thought we had discussed that you were going to stay here during your pregnancy. Especially since you are so unwell and need assistance.”

“You have got to be kidding, Mason. I have a life of my own, remember? I am an artist whose chances of reaching the top are now unlikely because of my . . .” She paused midway, raised her hands to her eyes, and wiped her tears, “In just a few days, I have cried more than I have in my entire life.”

“Must be the hormones.”

“Of course, it’s the stupid hormones.” Lucy cried and turned her back on me. “It makes me feel so stupid and weak. Besides, all I seem to be able to want to do is cry.”

“I think it makes you look cute.”

“Oh, sure. Bloodshot eyes, throwing up, runny nose, looking all a mess! You are just trying to make me feel better, and you know it.”

“No, really,” I began, meaning every word. “You are anything but weak.”

“Still doesn’t change the fact that I am going to get away from here before the media or someone else catches wind of it.”

“All my workers sign a non-disclosure agreement.”

Lucy turned toward me and frowned. “Why do you like to act like you have everything under control?”

“Because I do.”

“Well, not in this case. I am going to leave. I have taken some time to think about it, and I think it’s the best idea for your family and mine.”

“I think I am best positioned to discuss what’s best for my family.”

“Your family? What about me and my family?”

“I am thinking about you and your family. It’s my child, too. So, you staying here makes the most sense. I have the space, the resources, and the means to take care of you and our baby.”

Lucy sighed deeply and turned away. “An idea to add me to one of your numerous mistresses. That is very Mason of you.”

“Mistresses? Who said anything about mistresses? That’s not what I said, please stop putting words in my mouth.”

She turned, and her frown deepened. “Okay, so what is your grand plan? For me to just give up the life I had before you, and what, be your live in baby mama?”

“I was thinking that maybe getting married and announcing our union to the public ourselves would be the perfect next step.”

Lucy looked at my face in shock, and when she found out I was serious, she burst out laughing while holding her ribs. “That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard you say. You know, you sounded very serious right now?”
