He hadn’t looked overly convinced that I could, though. And that’s what has me so distracted I can barely follow what the doctor is telling me. I can only be grateful that she said she was going to put it all in writing.

“Hey, it’ll be okay,” she adds, squeezing my shoulder gently. “Lots of great dads don’t get to show up for all the firsts, you know? We’ll get to see him another time, I’m sure, since you said you’re going to marry him.”

“True,” I agree. “That’s not my problem, anyway. Adam and I are as tight as ever. We’re just having a little trouble with his ex trying to get full custody of their twins. After the way she abandoned them, we don’t want the boys to have anything to do with her at all. I’m still trying to work through some of their trauma with them, thanks to her.”

She nods. “Yeah, that must be rough. Well, go home, get some rest, and enjoy those boys as much as possible. That’s my prescription for you, okay?”

I grin. “Yeah? I can do that.”

“Great, then we’ll see each other in about a month, and by then maybe Adam will be able to come too. Even if you have to bring along a couple of five-year-olds. I won’t mind if you do. That’s what I have plenty of nurses for.”

“That is so awesome. I really appreciate it.”

“Go ahead and get dressed, and don’t forget to stop by the front desk to schedule your appointment, Melissa. I can’t wait to meet those little boys.”

I’m feeling decidedly good about my choice of doctor as I head for my car. Then I pull out my cell phone to see who messaged me while I was in there, and my face falls.

Hey, Sis, you’ll never guess who came by the restaurant to see me this afternoon. Well, two different whos, really. Your man stopped off with the boys to pick up some lunch that I’m not supposed to tell you about, but then Vitto came in not long after they left. Weird, huh? But anyway, guess who asked me out for dinner tomorrow night.

Oh, God, is she kidding me?

Megan, have you forgotten already that none of us is sure if that guy is bad news? I mean, Adam told me he has his cop friend checking out whether he’s really a detective, but seriously? Are you going to go there with this guy when he was just being such a creeper?

She doesn’t even miss a beat.

Maybe I can pick his brain while I’m there, you know? Try to find out what he really knows and why he was following you. We know he said he’s interested in those other twins and their mother, too. So, whatever he’s up to, maybe it’s not personal.

I wish she could see me rolling my eyes at her.

You should at least wait and see if Adam gets confirmation that this guy is legit.. For all we know, he could actually bethe one who got sent after the boys. Or he could be some sort of a pedophile with a twin fetish or something. You don’t know anything about the guy. Can you at least promise to keep this date with him out in the public eye? As in, don’t go anywhere alone with him?

I already anticipate her response.

So, you’re saying if we decide to take it up a notch, we should just do that right on the dinner table? I mean, that could work, but I’m sure we’d end up in some newspaper or other afterwards.

I fire off a more heated response.I can’t believe you. You’re going to get yourself into some real trouble one of these days. David was a wannabe bad ass, but this guy? Whatever team he might be playing for, I can guarantee he’s playing for keeps.

Her text glares at me for the next few hours. It’s obvious she must have put her phone away once she typed it in:

Then I suppose I’ll just have to be careful. I’ll talk to you later, Sis. Gotta go!

When I get home, I can’t decide what to tell Adam first. Should I tell him the baby is doing fine, or should I voice my very huge concern that my sister seems to have lost her mind? I opt to mention the baby first, since our child would clearly be higher up his list of priorities than worrying about Megan.

“Our little one is doing just fine,” I say as I come through the front door and see him standing in the kitchen. “I got to hear the heart beating. It was so awesome.”

He turns and smiles warmly as he takes me into his arms. “That’s good news, sweetheart,” he says. “The boys are down for a nap. Maybe we could celebrate before I have to go to work.”

I snicker. “Celebrate how?”

He gives me that look. “I think you know.”

Even though I’m worried about my sister, there’s nothing I can do about it if she makes bad choices, and things have been so hectic the last few days that there hasn’t been a moment to ‘celebrate.’ And let’s face it, I’d much rather ‘celebrate’ than be ‘celibate,’ so I keep my worries to myself for now.

“That sounds like the best idea I’ve heard all day,” I tell him, giving him my look right back.

In the middle of so much crazy, I think I need to just shut off my brain for a little while and think with my heart.
