Chapter fifteen

Adam

WhenMisstookmeaside around three, I thought she was considering round two before I got ready to head to Rudolpho’s, but instead she’d confessed that, having no idea she’d be having sex anytime soon, she’d let her shots lapse.

“I know it sucks, but unless we want to end up adding yet another complication to this little fiasco we’re dealing with, I think we need to be a whole lot more careful. I’ve got an appointment next week, but you know they’re going to want to check to see if you put a baby in me before they’ll give me an injection. I mean, I don’t even know if we were planning to do that sort of thing again, or if it was just a momentary weakness, but maybe you should pick something up at the store just in case, okay?”

I told her I’d pick up some things and surprise her later.

So now I’m anxious for the evening meal to end. I already have the bag of goodies, including condoms, lube, and even a sexy little nightie I’m hoping she’ll wear.

Do I think it’s a good idea to take things with Miss to the next level? I don’t know. But the alternative of going back to leaving her alone seems impossible, so I figure I might as well jump in and see if we can make something good of this, or if we’re going to crash and burn another time.

“Boss, you’ve sure got your head up in the clouds,” says Dale as he grins over at me. “Are things going good with Anna?”

I grimace. “Oh, God, I didn’t even tell you. That gorgeous little redhead isn’t really even Anna at all. You remember the girl I told you about three years ago, Melissa James? How I asked her to marry me and she said she couldn’t because she had to finish school? Anna is actually that same girl.”

“You mean this chick was lying to you, and you’re still totally into her?” he scoffs. “That’s pretty crazy, Adam, even for you.”

“Oh, come on, I’m not that crazy,” I grumble. “Sure, I get a few mood swings, and my ex would sure love to prove I was totally bipolar or something, but I think I’m pretty normal when somebody isn’t yanking my chain. And yeah, I was pissed off at first, but I guess she was just mad that I didn’t recognize her and thought it was just going to be a joke, except she couldn’t figure out how to deliver the punchline.”

Dale rolls his eyes. “If you’re that hard up for a date, I could set you up with my sister. She’d never pull a stunt like that one, and she’d probably love to quit her job just to stay home with a couple of five-year-olds.”

I laugh. “Uh, thanks, but I think I’m going to see how all this pans out. It’s wrapped up in plenty of potential, we just have to work a few kinks out.”

“I saw that bag you put in the closet, dude,” he teases. “If you’re trying for kink, you’ve got a little way to go. Sorry, it’s kind of a see-through bag and I couldn’t help looking.”

I shrug. “I was thinking ‘quiet evening,’ myself.”

He chuckles. “And so it begins. This girl really has you wrapped around her little finger.”

“Or maybe her ring finger,” I say casually. “You didn’t hear the other part of the story. Now she’s pretending to be my fiancée because my ex showed up trying to take back our kids, and when I told her no, she said she’d see me at mediation. So far there hasn’t been any sort of paperwork filed, but I went and got a restraining order against her, and Melissa’s uncle has agreed to help me if she tries anything through the courts.”

“Wow, brother, you got too much on your plate right now,” he says with a low whistle. “I’d hate to be in your shoes.”

I laugh. “Maybe it’s not as bad as it sounds, if things actually work out with the girl. You never know.”

“Well, good luck with that, my friend,” he says. “If you want to head out, I can get Mary to help me clean up tonight. They just locked the doors, so we won’t be serving anyone else tonight.”

“That’d be great, Dale,” I say, smiling. “I’ve been wishing we were done for almost an hour now, but I didn’t think anyone could tell.”

“You go have a nice, quiet evening,” he says, giving me a thump on the back. “God knows you could use one.”

I spend the drive home contemplating my life, and the role Melissa James could possibly have in it. Sure, things with her always seem to be unpredictable, but compared to the way things had been going between me and Gena during our brief marriage, I didn’t mind. At least if I get with Melissa, I know she’ll be home with me each night, instead of like Gena, out screwing directors just to land her roles or traipsing off to Italy at the drop of a hat and then coming back again as if it’s no big deal.

Yeah, maybe I still have a few anger issues with my ex. But who can blame me after some of the horrible stunts she’s pulled? I find myself looking forward to a brighter future, hopefully with a girl who has a comparatively level head on her shoulders. Which is really saying something about Gena, considering all the antics Melissa has pulled over the last month.

But the thing I contemplate the most is the notion of making our engagement real. The last time I asked Miss to marry me, it was selfish and impulsive. I just didn’t want to lose the best piece of ass I’d ever had, and I was sure that once she went off to college, she would find somebody else. But she hadn’t done that, and from the fact that she also hadn’t been getting birth control shots the whole time, it didn’t seem like she’d even tried.

It makes me wonder if she’s been just as stuck on me. How has she felt about me all this time? Could we really make something out of all this?

The boys are sleeping soundly when I look in on them, and Miss is clearly in her suite. I don’t know if she is asleep or if she might be waiting for me, but I don’t think she’ll mind if I check in on her, considering the promise I’d given her on the way out the door earlier.

I find her in her sitting area flopped on the sofa, a steamy romance novel perched in her hands. She looks up at me with a slightly naughty smile painted on her lips, and it hits me right in the groin.

“I hope they’re doing something that put some ideas into your head, ” I tell her with an even naughtier grin.

“Oh, I suppose they’re doing a decent job of it at the moment,” she says with a cute little giggle. “He’s got her pinned to the wall of her office cubicle. Would that even work? I think they might make the thing fall over.”
