Fuck. Maybe she knows more than I thought.
“Was it you? The drone? Ismaele? Cesare?” I focus on her eyes.
No surprise at all. None.
“Did you really think I’d fall for your trickery?” She presses her lips into a tight line. “You should be apologizing to me. Do you think I’m a fool? That I know nothing and that you can just say you’re engaged out of nowhere?”
“Granny—”
“Shush!” She lifts her finger. “I’m not done. At least you had the decency to bring the girl you actually like here. I knew you two would never go in the right direction, so I gave you a little push before it was too late. If you weren’t meant to be, you would’ve walked away from each other. Now we all know the truth.”
“You could’ve gotten us killed,” I say.
She shakes her head. “I never would’ve let that happen. You were never in any real danger.”
“Do you really think this is nothing?” Adriana points at my bruises. “You don’t know my brother. We were lucky. What did you promise him?”
“My deal with your brother is between him and me. And Salvatore should know better than to try to pull a stunt like that on his poor grandma! I could’ve died believing a lie!”
Adriana opens her mouth, but I place my hand on her shoulder.
“I can’t believe you did this. You could’ve just talked to me,” I say to my grandma.
She purses her lips. “Oh please. You would’ve told me what I wanted to hear. You would’ve lied to my face, and that would’ve made the whole thing even worse.”
“Who else was involved in this?” I ask.
Someone else must have lied to me too.
My grandma doesn’t say anything, just watches me.
“It’s a security risk! I can’t have anyone with me who I can’t fully trust.”
“Then you figure it out. You’ve been slacking off lately. Being in love isn’t an excuse.” She gives me a smile. “But if you want your family to trust you, you need to trust them too. You don’t bring a fake fiancée for Christmas and lie to everyone.”
“I only wanted to make you happy. That’s all.”
“A lie was never going to make me happy. You should’ve known that. But at least something good came out of it.” She focuses her gaze on Adriana. “Welcome to the family.”
“We’re not getting married just yet,” I say before my grandma can get any ideas. “We’re just dating.”
“Call it whatever you want, honey. But just so you know, I intend to live long enough to see your wedding.”
“Then we’ll never get married,” I joke.
“Aw, come here.” She spreads her arms.
I step forward and bend down so she can hug me.
“Don’t be ridiculous. I won’t wait forever. But don’t you dare throw a fake wedding just for me!” She pats me on the back.
“I won’t.”
“Promise me.”
“I promise.”
“Good. Now help me up. Let’s go inside. The rest of the family is waiting.”
