“I don’t know. He’s good at hiding and runs a few smaller groups under different names. When I tried to reach out to him to tell him about Grandma, I was just told the message would get to him. I could only get in touch with one of his men.”
“Do you think he was hoping you wouldn’t get married? Maybe he wants to wait until your grandma is gone to make his move, but your engagement announcement changed everything. Are you sure no one else in the family has any contact with him? Your grandma? Your other uncles? He could be in contact with someone, which would make it easy for him to find out, but he told that person not to say anything to anyone else.”
Salvatore scratches the back of his head. “I don’t think Flavio would do that, but...”
“You’re not sure.”
“No, I can’t be. Like I said, I haven’t heard from him at all. It’s not as easy to look into him because I don’t have many contacts on Sicily.”
“Then have someone look into him. We’ll have to keep pretending we’re engaged after this, right? Until your grandma...”
“Yeah.”
“Well, we definitely have to know who we’re up against. I don’t want to go back home and get killed.” Although, Cesare might be the first one in the kill-me line, unless he’s the one doing all this to get me to return.
“I’ll figure it out. You won’t be in any danger.” His gaze meets mine.
I want to believe him and be as confident as him, but I don’t know if I can. It’s Salvatore, after all.
It’s a wonder I’m just sitting here and talking to him without wanting to strangle him every damn second. Maybe just every other second. I guess that’s some tiny progress.
He better not get me killed.
CHAPTER10
Salvatore
Adriana might beon to something. There isn’t much information on Flavio that I can find. He’s always worked from the shadows. He’s not like the other bosses who want their name well known everywhere or at least famous in the mafia circles.
Tracking him down by his legitimate business is impossible too because he doesn’t have one. All the fronts and stash houses are under fake names or belong to the people who are under his control.
When I searched for him for my grandma, the stash house I found and connected to him was immediately abandoned after I left him a message through his guy, who agreed to meet with one of mine.
No one has come anywhere near that house again, and there hasn’t been any activity in the area. Flavio’s guy has vanished too. His name was fake, but he’d offered proof that he was really working for Flavio.
I get what Flavio is doing. He wants to control everything, but he doesn’t want to get caught or deal with too much mafia drama. He’s not attached to any territory but moves around all the time, but that means he’s going through other mafia bosses’ and gangs’ territories and has to do it fast enough not to get noticed.
It’s possible he has deals in place to protect himself. His operations are small enough that no one should get too worried about them, but all the money he gets when all is said and done must be sweet.
But what if he’s changed his mind? What if he’s got too many enemies? Maybe everyone knows him, and they’ve realized what he’s doing, so they want him gone. He could need new territories and towns to do his business. Or maybe now that he’s getting older, he doesn’t want to move around so much anymore.
The main reason he left in the first place was because he was envious of my father. What if he really wants to come for me and take what’s mine?
I glance down at my phone. There’s no new information about the drone or where it might’ve come from. No way to narrow down the source of the threat. At least not yet.
If he’s still in contact with someone from my family, it’s got to be my grandma. She adores him, maybe even more than all of her sons. I can’t believe he’s doing this to her, but he might still be in touch. He could’ve threatened her and told her he’d go no contact with her again if she told anyone. I wouldn’t find that surprising, but I can’t be sure.
What if I ask my grandma about him and it only brings up painful memories? It’s not the right time. She seems happy, and I don’t want to mess with that.
Just as I enter the living room, I spot her sitting on the sofa.
“Salvatore, what’s with all the security?” she asks.
“What do you mean?” I spread my lips into a smile. “We always need to have a lot of security.”
She purses her lips and shakes her head at me. “Don’t try to fool me, boy. I’m old, not blind. What’s going on?”
“Nothing much. Just a minor security issue, but it’s nothing to worry about. I got everything under control.” There will be no drones getting anywhere near us because my men will take them out of the sky before they reach the house.
