I need to put some distance between Salvatore and me. I must’ve rolled over in my sleep and somehow ended up very close to him.
It was a mistake to let him move the pillows. Next time, I should just open my eyes as soon as I wake up and make sure he’s not anywhere near me before touching anything.
Once I’m out of the bathroom, Salvatore’s gaze travels my body.
“What? No inspiration for redesigning your dress today?” He grins.
I roll my eyes at him. “You should be happy about that.”
The truth is, I’m just too distracted, and I couldn’t care less about what I’m wearing. I need to try to get in touch with my family, so I grab my burner phone. All the numbers I need are in there, so I text my parents first.
A smile pops up on my face when they answer almost immediately. We exchange a few more texts, but when they ask me why I don’t have my regular phone, I just tell them it’s complicated.
Why ruin Christmas and their trip for nothing? We can talk about everything once I’m free and everyone’s back. I text Enzo next, and he responds quickly too.
But when I try to send Cesare a message, I can’t. His number no longer exists. He must’ve changed it on purpose. Sadness fills my chest.
Why does my brother have to be so complicated? Why is he acting like this? He must be furious with me because I left, but I didn’t have a choice. Even without Salvatore in the picture, I probably wouldn’t have stayed anyway.
I just hope he’s okay.
“Is everything all right?” Salvatore asks, his face serious.
“Yeah.”
“Did I ruin your plans for Christmas?”
“You wish, but no.”
“Have you heard from Cesare?”
I sigh. “Nope. You?”
He shakes his head. “Look, whatever is going on between you two, he’ll come around.”
“I’m not so sure about that this time.”
“He loves you. He’d do anything for you.”
“Maybe not anymore.”
“He might be mad, but he’ll get over it.”
I raise an eyebrow at him. “Are you really trying to make me feel better or do you just want me to smile for your family?”
“Maybe both.” He winks.
I groan.
CHAPTER7
Adriana
“The tree looks different,”Salvatore says as we reach the living room.
I focus my attention on the Christmas tree. He’s right. It was ornamented with gold and red Christmas balls and ribbons, but now it’s more colorful and all the ribbons are gone.
Some of the ornaments are different too. They look older and elaborate, and they’re in different shapes. There’s a nativity scene under the tree that didn’t exist yesterday, along with a bunch of presents around it.
