Adriana stands at the top of the stairs. Her dark red lips are spread into a smile. And the dress she’s wearing... Fuck.

I can barely recognize the black dress I bought for her. It now has a deep cleavage, holes on the sides, and a high slit. Crazy hot.

Butsonot appropriate for meeting my family for the first time. I glance at my grandma’s face. Her lips are pursed together, her brow furrowed.

“What is this?” my grandma asks. “Is that what you want your future wife to wear?”

“It’s top fashion. Straight off the Milan runway.” I should’ve known Adriana would come up with something like this.

She’s going to drive me crazy, and not just because I want to grab her hand and take her back to our room so I can get her out of that dress and fuck her senseless.

My grandma mutters something under her breath that sounds a lot like complaining about my whole generation.

“She looks pretty,” my mom says, her dark brown eyes meeting mine as she runs her hand through her shoulder-length brown hair.

Judging by the look in her eyes, she thinks I made Adriana wear that dress. My father always picked everything he wanted my mom to wear, and sometimes, he had her wear very revealing dresses just because he wanted to show her off.

I wouldn’t do any of that, but Adriana is complicated, and she’s not going to be my real wife. She’s just playing her part, and I should be the stage director and the one choosing the best costumes, but it looks like my main actress is a rebellious, spoiled star.

“This is Adriana Benedetti, my fiancée,” I announce as she reaches the bottom of the stairs.

Everyone’s gazes turn to her.

Luckily, Adriana just keeps smiling. My mom gets to her first and wraps her arms around her.

“I’m so glad it’s you,” she says.

Adriana meets my gaze over my mom’s shoulder.

“Let’s go to the dining room. I’m starving,” one of my uncles, Alessandro, says.

As everyone trails after him, my mom catches my arm and tugs me to her.

“Why didn’t you tell me anything? If I’d known it was Adriana from the start, I would’ve worried way less,” she whispers into my ear.

“Because it all happened so quickly, and I wanted it to be a surprise. I didn’t want anyone to know.” Since everyone’s always pestering me about marriage, I’ve been lying to them for a long time just to stop them from trying to set me up with someone.

“I’m so happy for you two. You’ve known each other for a very long time. Why didn’t you invite her family too? Cesare? He’s your best friend, and now you’ll be family.”

“They’re all busy.” I eye her carefully.

Once my mom finds out the truth about Adriana and me, she’ll be disappointed. But for now, it’s a believable lie. I’m not surprised my mom likes the idea of me marrying Adriana.

Adriana is a mafia princess, and my best friend’s sister. My mom doesn’t know Adriana and I weren’t exactly friendly to each other when we were younger, and I guess we still aren’t.

“Will you help your grandma get to the dining room?” my mom asks.

“Yeah, of course.”

My mom lets go of me and catches up with Adriana.

“I approve of your choice,” my grandma says as she slides her arm through mine. “She has wide hips. She’s going to give you plenty of heirs.”

I grimace. At least she approves, and that’s the only thing that matters.

But Adriana must’ve heard her because she turns around and opens her mouth.

“I’m right here, honey,” I say with a smile before she can utter a word.
