“No. Give me your word.”
I groan. She knows I never go back on my word, doesn’t she?
“I give you my word.”
She’s right. This thing concerns her too. Her life might be in danger because of me. I have to get to the bottom of this before something bad happens.
There’s no way I’m letting anyone mess with me or my business, especially not with my fake fiancée. She’s here because of me, and she’s my responsibility. I’ll keep her safe no matter what it takes.
“Good.” Adriana smiles. “See you later then. I promise your grandma won’t even notice you’re gone.”
I don’t think that’s going to happen because my grandma notices everything, but I’m sure she’ll be curious about Adriana and will want to talk to her, so time will pass quicker. She’ll notice I’m gone, but she won’t notice how long, and that’s good enough for me.
Now, I need to replace most of my security team and make sure no one can get to us. Then I’ll find the bastard who must’ve forgotten who I really am and what I can do, and I’ll remind him of it. This won’t go unpunished.
CHAPTER9
Adriana
I paceup and down the room. Who could be threatening us like that? And why? It doesn’t make much sense.
If they wanted to kill us, they would’ve tried something. If they can’t get to us, why even bother threatening us? Do they think we’re easily scared?
Because if they actually wanted us dead, they wouldn’t have given us a warning. It’s just stupid to send a message and basically have Salvatore up his security measures, unless the message is about something else.
I chew on the inside of my cheek. What if the news has spread already? But my parents and Enzo would be frantically calling me to ask me what the hell is going on.
Cesare would be calling too. If not me because he doesn’t have my number, he’d reach out to Salvatore. But no one has done it.
What if it is Cesare? Maybe he doesn’t actually want Salvatore and me dead. He just doesn’t want us together, so he’s playing mind games instead. But if Salvatore and I were really together, we wouldn’t have given up so easily.
Salvatore enters the room, and I turn to him.
“You didn’t have an arranged marriage planned or a deal with someone, or your family planning it for you, right?”
Because then it would also make sense that they’d want us apart but not really dead. They wouldn’t just have me killed because that would cause tons of trouble with Salvatore and Cesare.
At least I hope Salvatore would want to avenge my death since it would be all his fault. Not that I intend to die so easily.
“No. Not that I know of,” he says. “They should know better. I wouldn’t marry just any girl they suggested. It’s my choice, and they have no say in it.”
“Okay, sure, but what if they intended to introduce you to someone soon? Maybe the daughter of some mafia boss. It doesn’t have to be an arranged marriage but a marriage out of love.”
He laughs. “No. That would be too crazy to even try.”
“What about any women you hooked up with? Anyone in the mafia? Crazy enough to go to great lengths to end up with you?” I bet he’s been with a ton of women.
One of his charming smiles, and who wouldn’t hook up with him? When you don’t know him, of course.
“No. My one-night stands don’t even know who I am. I disappear and make sure they can’t track me down,” he says.
I roll my eyes. Right. I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything different.
“What? I don’t want any complications.”
“You don’t think you’ll ever find your true love, right? But it’s fine. You would’ve ruined someone’s life anyway.”
He tilts his head at me. “And what about you? Are you happy that people might’ve found out about us? Will that ruin your chance for an arranged marriage? Was it you? Did you tell someone?”
