“I did want to ask you something else. I know you’ve been staying in the spare bedroom, but how would you feel moving into my room? It would be our room, of course. But I just miss you, Simone, and I would love to be closer to you all the time. I know my work schedule is insane, but knowing that I have you in my bed to come home to would make it all a bit more bearable. That is, if you want that, too.”

Now my heart threatened to soar out of my chest.

“I – I would like that very much, Hugo.”

“Good, it’s settled then. It’s getting late, so we’ll move all of your stuff later, but at least bring yourself to my – our – room tonight?”

“Of course.”

That night, my hands felt their way around his back as Hugo moved above me. I've never felt this close to anyone before. I've never felt this lost in someone before. Everything, and I mean everything, felt right again. I fell asleep in Hugo’s arms with him whispering beautiful words in my ear about how happy he was that I was there with him.

For the first time in weeks, I drifted off into a dead sleep, the kind of sleep that could restore your soul, and it sure started to restore mine.

Hugo asked me to sit in on the team’s next meeting with the international group, since it was being held in the office. My heart swelled with pride as he spoke passionately about the vision he shared with his friends for the medical center, captivating everyone present with his undeniable charisma.

As the meeting concluded and we celebrated Hugo, Dominic, Logan, and Austin's successful collaboration, I couldn't help but marvel at how far we'd come – both individually and as a team.

“I have something special planned for you tonight,” Hugo said as he snuck his arms around me in the break room. I quickly looked around, but no one was there.

“What is it?”

“You’ll see,” he grinned. “Wear your blue dress and be ready to leave by eight.”

Hugo planted a soft, chaste kiss on my cheek and walked away.

I spent the rest of the day floating on cloud nine and was absolutely giddy thinking about what we could possibly be doing tonight. The clock seemed to move at half speed, but finally it was time to go home.

Immediately, I dove into the shower and shaved, buffed, and polished everything. Putting on my most upbeat playlist, I pulled the blue dress from my closet and started on my hair and makeup. An hour later, I was mostly satisfied with what I saw in the mirror. I glanced at my phone and saw I had ten minutes to wait.

Exactly ten minutes later, Hugo texted me to meet him outside.

A sleek black limo was waiting on the curb, Hugo standing in front of it, looking breathtakingly handsome.

“Simone, you are so beautiful,” he said reverently, giving me a kiss.

“You’re pretty handsome yourself.”

Hugo pulled out a slim velvet box from his pocket and presented it to me.

“What’s this?”

“Open it and find out.”

I opened the box to reveal a gorgeous gold necklace with a diamond teardrop pendant.

“Hugo,” I breathed. “This is beautiful. But it’s too much.”

“Nothing is too much when it comes to you, Simone,” he said, pulling out the necklace and twirling me around to fasten it around my neck. I touched the pendant as it glowed in the streetlight.

“You’re perfect,” he said, holding my hand. He helped me into the car and slid into the seat next to me before the driver took off, speeding down the city streets. I loved Boston at night, and I marveled at how the lights glowed off the Charles River as we drove down Storrow Drive. The car slid to a stop outside of a nondescript building in an unfamiliar neighborhood.

“Where are we?” I asked Hugo suspiciously.

“You’ll see,” he said with a smile.

"Iamgoing to come out of this alive, aren't I?" I teased Hugo. We laughed together.

He led me into the building, which felt cavernous and empty. As soon as we walked in, lights flicked on and I realized we were on some sort of set.
