I decide at this point to have some fun with the situation and lay it on thick. “I used to have a place in the Hamptons, but it’s just been overrun lately with riffraff. So last year I bought an apartment in Paris. I plan on being there most of the summer, work permitting. The private jet gets me there in 7 hours and I just sleep the whole way.” I give her my best smug smile.
“Oh, wow… how amazing is that...” she stammers. “If you’re ever in need of a travel partner, you know who to call. I absolutely adore Paris.”
I tilt my head to the side and give her a small smile.I don’t think so, my dear.
I push back from the table. “Shall we?” I ask.
“Umm, okay. I’m guessing you have a busy day at work tomorrow.” She grabs her purse and looks around the table to make sure she hasn’t forgotten anything.
“Every day is a busy day, Camilla.”
“So true. But sometimes you just have to make time for some fun,” she says, holding onto my arm and leaning into me as we walk to the door. “Let me know if you’d like to get together again this weekend. I really would love to see your place.”
We walk out and I wait while Camilla gets in her Uber. I give her a quick hug and practically have to shove her in the car to send her on her way.
I climb into my car and Peter asks, “Nice dinner, sir?”
“The food was spectacular as always, Peter. The company… not so much.”
Chapter 5
Sasha
“Oh, gosh, so she sounds like notquitewhat you are looking for?” I say to Spencer. He has just scolded me for the past ten minutes about how Camilla is money-hungry, too short and wears too much makeup.
“Yes, you coulddefinitelysay that. I’m paying a lot of money for your services and expect more than I got last night.”
I kind of wished I hadn’t started off my day checking in with Spencer about his date. It’s Friday and I was hoping for an easy day of touching base with some clients and setting up a few more dates for the weekend. Now, I need to find more options for Spencer asap, so he feels like I’m really listening to him and capable of finding suitable dates. But, this is my job, and I intend to do it well so I’m taking his complaints to heart and being as professional as possible with my responses.
“So, what is an acceptable level of makeup?” I ask, trying not to sound annoyed by this ridiculous requirement.
“I want to see her face, not the makeup. I prefer for it just to disappear.”
“Hmm… okay… disappearing makeup,” I say. I type some notes in his file about this and also include the word ‘IMPOSSIBLE’ in all caps. “And, I completely understand about the height issue. That’s obviously a lot easier to measure. I’m wondering if Camilla wears heels so often she’s forgotten what her real height is,” I attempt a joke and get nothing in return. I can feel him grimacing over the phone.
“I’m a very busy man, Sasha, and I don’t have time for these dating misfires. Please call me when you have found someone who fits my description.”
We end our call, leaving me feeling like a chastised toddler. I really thought the date with Camilla would have gone much better than it did. But, I don’t think I fully realized how particular Spencer is.
The rest of my morning is spent looking for suitable candidates for Spencer. As lunch approaches, I still have nothing to show for all my hours of hard work.
Lauren and I grab lunch together at the taco place down the street. The Tacos Al Pastor are my favorites here and, as I dig in, I start to feel a little better about my progress so far.
“So, Spencer Sullivan?” I begin. “I sent him out with Camilla last night and he was not happy with the date at all.”
“What happened?” Lauren asks, adding salsa verde to her tacos.
“Where do you want me to begin?” I answer, rolling my eyes. “Apparently she’s too short, wears too much makeup and is overly interested in his finances.”
“Oh, no bueno. So, who’s up next? Did you call Natasha like I suggested last week?”
“I did. She’s practically engaged it sounds like.”
“Dammit! I knew she wouldn’t be on the market for long. With those big eyes and incredibly long legs. She’s a stunner. And an attorney to boot. That’s just not fair.”
Lauren and I chat for a while longer about what to do regarding Spencer. She gives me some great ideas about other forms of networking to find someone really special for him. Now if I just had several more hours in the day, I could implement them all and come through with a winner. I’m determined to make this work though. I need to prove to Lauren and myself that I can do this. And, I also want to prove it to Spencer. It’s quite apparent I haven’t really impressed him so far.
At the end of the day I pack up my laptop and turn off the light. Lauren is still in her office working. I pop my head in. “Have a great weekend. Don’t work too hard.” She groans and says she’s heading out soon.
