“Don’t, I kept it to myself on purpose. It wasn’t just you, it’s also just… if I admit it then it’s really real,” she said as she let out a long breath.

“Well, you’re not alone now. You need me at any time, I’m there,” I said firmly.

“You really are okay with it?”

“Things are different now. I’ve been finding myself and establishing this life. It’s not exactly fit for kids around here and I like it that way,” I said, realizing that I truly felt that way. “Not that I don’t intend to take that baby for a night whenever you need a break. Oh, I bet we can find a crib in this blue!”

“Stop,” she said, fighting back tears again and fanning her face. “I’m so tired of crying easily but that’s so fucking sweet, Eliza.”

“It’s what best friends do. Now come on, let’s shop for a crib and I want to know everything the doctor’s told you,” I said as I pulled out my laptop. “Wait, are you hungry?”

“Starving,” she groaned. “Now that morning sickness is gone I’m hungry all the time.”

“What does the baby want?”

“Tacos,” she said. “And Pizza. Just pick one.”

“Nope,” I sang out as I ordered us both and ignored her protests. It had been a long time since we had a day of just existing together like this and I felt myself relaxing.

Even if there were two bodyguards outside my door.

Chapter

Eighteen

Eliza

It should be a sin to look that good.

Romeo had gone all out for our date tonight. His hair was slicked back and styled with gel. He smelled amazing, his scent accentuated by a spicy cologne. The dark, kohl eyeliner around his eyes had them popping.

Suddenly, I felt a bit underdressed.

I opted for a black V-neck, some jeans that hugged my ass in the perfect way, and some tall, black boots.

Yet Romeo’s smile widened at the sight of me. He slowly raked his eyes over me, taking in every inch of my body.

“You look amazing,” Romeo praised as he walked forward, pulling me in for a kiss. “Are you ready for tonight?”

“Definitely,” I lied through my teeth. In truth, I had spent the last hour nervous as hell. I’d never been a fan of horror films.

In fact, I don’t think I’ve made it through a single one in my entire life.

My besties had been on the phone with me, telling me I was an idiot for not calling and telling Romeo that I couldn’t do this, but I vowed to make it through.

If my mate loved horror films, then I was going to pretend. One movie couldn’t be that bad… right?

“Since the movie is a bit earlier tonight, I thought we’d get popcorn and snacks while we’re there and then dinner after. Does that work for you?”

“Sounds good.”

Snacks are what make going to the movies so enticing anyway. At least there’d be salty, buttery popcorn and chocolate to distract me with.

If I didn’t launch my popcorn into the crowd at the first jump scare.

“So, what’s tonight’s vintage movie?” I questioned. “Do I get to know yet?”

“The Exorcist,” he said with a big grin on his face, his eyes lighting up in excitement. I swallowed down the bile rising in my throat. “It’s a classic.”
