“I’ll come to you before I do anything,” Antonio said.
Jaxson relaxed and nodded his head. He figured that Antonio wasn’t going to do anything until he had proof, but he needed to make sure. Just in case.
“What about any of the other employees?” Ezra asked. “Have you noticed anyone who could be suspicious or has treated Sofia badly?”
Jaxson thought about it for a second. If they would have asked him several months ago, he wouldn’t have been able to say anything because he was never out on the main floor with the employees. Since Sofia came, he started being down there more whenever she worked.
But that didn’t mean he was paying attention to the other employees. He was normally paying attention to Sofia and talking to her.
“I don’t think so,” Jaxson said. “Well, I haven't actually seen her be rude to Sofia directly."
"Who?" Ezra asked.
"What did this person do?" Antonio asked.
"Well, she didn't really do anything, but the way she spoke just didn't, and still doesn't, sit well with me," Jaxson said. He thought back to the day he was helping Sofia after he found out she had been mugged the night before. It was a nightmare of his that it would happen again, but he was going to do his best to make sure it never did.
"What did this person say?" Antonio asked.
"I didn't really think about it when it happened but looking back on it, something was up," Jaxson said. "Lucy is another bartender at the club. The day after Sofia got mugged, one of the bouncers stopped her as she arrived at work. That’s when I saw the bruise on her face. When I was walking to my office, Lucy stopped me and told me to leave Sofia and help her."
"Did she know that Sofia was badly injured?" Ezra asked as he took a seat.
"No, I don't think she did. She seemed concerned that I was holding someone in my arms, but once I told her who it was, she changed."
"Hmmm," Antonio said. "I'll take a look into her. She was on my list, but I'll make sure I do her next."
"Has she done something like this before?" Ezra asked. "Around Sofia or in front of you and you just didn't register it?"
"I don't remember her doing anything in front of me or saying anything. Lucy has been sweet to customers but something about that interaction just doesn't sit well with me."
Antonio opened his mouth to say something, but before he could, a creaking noise was heard, and all their heads whipped to the stairs to see Sofia walking down.
What was she doing?
CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT
SOFIA
Sofia had woken up from her nap a couple of minutes ago. She had started to panic when she couldn't see her Daddy, but then she heard the faint voices, and knew that he was somewhere in the house. She didn't want to wait for him. Even though she knew that climbing out of the crib wasn't a good idea, she didn't care at this moment.
She just wanted her Daddy.
It had taken a lot out of her as she climbed over the railings and out of the crib. Scary even, when she realized that it was going to be harder to get down than she thought. But she had done it and now she was clutching Trixie and Mattie in her arms as she walked down the stairs, pacifier in her mouth. At first, Sofia didn't know if she was going to like the pacifier. Daddy had told her to try it at least once before she decided on anything, and she absolutely loved it.
She normally only used it when she was napping, but she didn't want to part with it yet. It was giving her comfort when she needed it.
Sofia started to slowly walk down the stairs but stopped when she heard her Daddy start to speak.
"Lucy is another bartender at the club. The day after Sofia got mugged, one of the bouncers stopped her as she arrived at work. That’s when I saw the bruise on her face. When I was walking to my office, Lucy stopped me and told me to leave Sofia and help her."
Why were they talking about Lucy and the incident in the club? What was going on?
"Did she know that Sofia was badly injured?" Ezra asked as he took a seat.
"No, I don't think she did. She seemed concerned that I was holding someone in my arms, but once I told her who it was, she changed."
"Hmmm," Antonio said. "I'll take a look into her. She was on my list, but I'll make sure I do her next."
