Hence, I’d gone the simple route and asked my sister to watch Destiny. Thanks to the hearing being the first case of the day, it was early, and I could get back to the shop with no one being the wiser. Destiny hadn’t been pleased when I disturbed her slumber, but thankfully, she’d fallen back to sleep in my car. I’d successfully transferred her from the seat, and into the pack n play in the spare room at Ireland’s place.

Ireland was still sleeping. Either from drinking a bit too much last night or activities with her husband, which I didn’t want to know about. All I cared about was Mack's statement about being on kid duty for the morning while nursing a cup of coffee and scratching his sleep tussled hair.

We’d, as a family, had gone out last night toFlameto celebrate Waverly’s strides in her recovery. Like everything with our family lately, it started nice, then turned into a shit show, then ended on a high note. Bonus about the dinner, everyone got to meet Posey, and she got to meet everyone.

Then, after dinner, I took Posey home. She had work, and I had court. Even though I wasn’t happy about her not being in my bed, I let it go, knowing it would be easier for me in the morning.

We had plans tonight, though.

Dinner with her mother and introducing Posey’s mother to Destiny.

“Look at you in a suit,” Cobi said sarcastically as he took the steps two at a time.

“Fuck off,” I grumbled when he got closer to me.

“Been waiting long?” Cobi leaned against the wrought-iron railing.

“About five minutes.”

Cobi pulled out his phone, and after fiddling with it, asked, “You nervous?”

“What the fuck do I have to be worried about, Cobi? You came to me asked me to do a job. I did it. This is just the last step.”

“Just checking. By the way, got a message from the DA. He wants us to meet him inside.”

“Then let’s go inside and get this shit over with.”

I started up the steps, only stopping when Cobi called out my name. I waited for him to catch up. “What?”

If my surly manner put the other man off, he didn’t say shit about it. It had nothing to do with what was about to go down inside, and everything to do with me not having Posey in my arms last night. Or having her body under mine as I woke her up.

“Listen, you did me a solid, and I just wanted to thank you. I know this has taken up more time in your life than you figured it would.” He shrugged. “If you need anything, let me know.”

“Anytime man, just promise me, next time you have something like this pop-up, keep the Banks name out of it.” The situation fucked with my relationship with Posey. I hated lying to her. The guilt from it was being to eat me up.

Cobi chuckled. “You got it, man. Let’s go get this shit done.”

I couldn’t agree more.

Long hours later, I stepped out of the courtroom and into the bright sun of late afternoon. There were a shit ton of people milling around. Some coming in and some leaving. I’d done my civil duty and testified. Because of all the documentation, it was a slam dunk. The DA had even taken a moment to thank me for working with them.

I’d cleared my plate at work before today, so I didn’t have to go in unless I wanted to. Pulling out my phone, the only message waiting for me was from Ireland. No doubt telling me where she was, and therefore where Destiny was.

Most likely at the shop.

My sister didn’t seem to understand the concept of maternity leave. When I clicked on the message, I snorted. Exactly as I predicted.

Before I went to the shop to pick up Destiny so we could get ready to meet Posey’s mom, I stopped at home first and changed. I didn’t need any more surprises from the kid. When I arrived at the shop, more of that bubble gum pop filtered through the speakers and I groaned. Ireland was not only rotting Mack Jr.’s brain, but Destiny’s too.

After finding Ireland in the bay with another car, I told her I’d call her later to update her on the case, then carried Destiny to my car. We only had a few more hours before we were going to meet Posey’s mom.

We couldn’t be late for that.

When Posey’s door opened a couple of hours later, her smile was my everything. “You’re early. Not that I’m complaining.” The words tumbled from her as she stepped aside, letting us in.

Destiny had conked out within seconds of me leaving our driveway, probably from a hard day of turning wrenches with her aunt and keeping Mack Jr. on his toes.

“Oh,” Posey exclaimed. “She looks adorable.”
