Christy scoffed beside me. She was glaring at Sophia as if she was fighting back the urge to pull her hair. “The only insignificant person here is you. Don’t talk to my best friend like that.”
“Or what?” Sophia asked, glaring back at Christy. “You’ll pull my hair? Omg! I’m scared.”
“You know, I was thinking of it, but now that you mentioned it. I might as well pull your hair.” Christy stepped forward, but I quickly held her wrist and pulled her back.
“Don’t let her get to you. She’s not worth it.”
Sophia laughed. “This is why I hate you, Mariana. You’re so full of pretense. What are you doing here by the way?”
“None of your business!” Christy yelled.
“We’re here to see the owner of this place,” I said, partly to find out if Vlad was okay since she’d been inside. And to piss her off too. I saw the way she was all over him at the gala. I hated it.
“Oh, Vlad can’t see you right now. How do I break this to you?”
“How do you break what to me?”
She angled over. Sophia was about two inches taller than I was and she was wearing an eight-inch heel. “Well, Vlad no longer has time or use for you, Mariana.”
My oxygen level dropped until I completely forgot how to breathe. “What do you mean by that?”
Her smile widened. “Vlad and I are engaged now. We’ll be getting married in two months.”
I paced backward in disbelief. Terror washed down my spine and there was a stabbing pain in my chest. “That can’t be true. No. I don’t believe you.”
“Why not go inside and ask him yourself?” Sophia stepped forward. “You were nothing but his plaything, Mariana. Did you really think there could be something more between you and him? Wake up, stupid. He used you, and now he’s dumping you for someone that is worth his time.”
Chapter 12 - Vlad
I had to choose between Mariana and my family. The choice had always been simple for me; my family always came first.
But for some reason, I couldn’t decide now.
The thing between me and Mariana was just a fling and nothing more, so why was there a pang of guilt in my chest? Why did it feel as if I’d betrayed her when I didn’t do anything wrong?
I hadn’t answered her call since last night and although I knew she’d be sick with worry for me, I couldn’t bring myself to talk to her right now, because that would mean breaking news of my engagement and I wasn’t ready for that.
The door to my office opened and Sophia walked in with a smile.
Fuck, I hate her.
“Guess what?” She leaned over my desk, tilting her face to the side in a desperate attempt to look cute, but all I could see was what a spoilt brat I wanted to dump in a forest somewhere far away.
“What?”
“I got rid of someone for you.”
How was I supposed to live out the rest of my life with her when she was so goddamn annoying. “I don’t have time for this bullshit. Get straight to the point or leave my office. I have things to do.”
Her smile dropped and a frown replaced it. “Fine. I got rid of Mariana. Told her about our engagement and how she wasnothing but a toy to you. You should have seen the look on her face when she left.”
I flew up to my feet, my blood turning cold. “You did what?”
Sophia straighten up from my desk. “Why do you look so mad? I did nothing wrong. Only told her the truth.”
“Right. Fuck you and fuck the truth.” I started off for the door, but Sophia’s hand wrapped around my arm.
Her touch was so disgusting I could feel the vomit crawl up my throat. “Let her leave. I’m your fiancée now.”
