Checking my watch, I realized it was nearly eight in the morning. Late for me. I hurried to get dressed and headed to my room to shower and get ready for the day.
I headed downstairs, hoping this morning wasn’t going to be awkward. The kitchen was empty, but there was a note on the coffee maker.
Pancakes are in the oven. We’re in the dining room.
I opened the oven and with a mitt, took the plate out. I picked up a pancake and ate it like toast as I waited for my coffee to brew. I carried my mug to the dining room. The table was covered with papers, crayons, and other school supplies. Taped to the wall were pictures of pegomastax, parrot-porcupine dinosaurs, and lemon-shaped moons.
Aiden was at the table coloring something while Duncan was at a printer he must have brought from his office that was spitting out paper.
“Hey.” Duncan smiled as I entered.
I nodded to the pictures. “I think you’re supposed to be teaching numbers and letters.”
He shrugged. “It’s only day one. How’d you sleep?”
The heat on my cheeks told me I was blushing. Dammit. “Fine.”
“I slept great.”
“Good.” I took a gulp of my coffee. “Well, I need to get going.”
“Are you going to catch the bad guys?” Aiden’s face was filled with hope.
“I’m going to try. Have fun at homeschool.” I left, heading to the kitchen to put my mug in the sink.
“Did you get something to eat?” Duncan said, startling me.
“Yes. Thank you.”
“Listen… about last night… I don’t want things to be weird for you, okay?”
“It’s weird to talk about it.”
He held his hands up in surrender. “I just have one more thing.”
“Okay.” I steeled myself for what he might say.
“You might have figured out that I’m a man who isn’t afraid to ask for what he wants, and what I want is for you to be in my bed for as long as you’re here.”
Oh, God.
“I know that your life is all work. I won’t ask you to change that. I know that when this is over, you’ll be on your way. But until then, I want to indulge whatever this is between us. No strings. No worries.”
My body was screaming, “yes, please.” My mind was warning me that getting too close to him was a risk. But he said no strings. He said he wouldn’t ask me to change my priorities.
“Can I think about it?”
“Absolutely.” He gave me his signature grin. One that suggested he figured I’d agree in the end. He was probably right.
“I’ll see you later.” As I walked past him, his arm snaked out. “How about a kiss for the road?”
Why not? His lips covered mine in a sweet, yet sensual, kiss. “Let me know if you’re going to miss dinner.”
My head was in a fog as I nodded.
“Go kick ass, Agent Marsden.”
I headed down to the garage, wondering what I was getting myself into, wondering if I’d be able to get myself out of it because I was pretty sure I was going to agree to his terms.
