"As a matter of fact, we know each other," he answers as he stops a few inches in front of me. "Hello, Chloe," he rumbles, and I swear his voice has fingers that reach out to caress my spine, causing me to shiver involuntarily.

"Hello...sir," I whisper, my heart pounding fast against my chest again.

His eyes shutter at my words. "How long have you been with this company?" he questions.

Eric is the one to answer, "Uh... she's been here three days, Sir. And in that time, she's managed to come up with a brilliant idea."

The corner of Kane's mouth tilts to the side, and I see something like pride flash through his eyes, "Did she now?"

From the corner of my eye, I see Eric giving me a meaningful look that says, 'Now's your chance.' But he doesn't understand. My head is void of any reasonable thoughts, and my throat feels so heavy that speaking feels like a Herculean task.

"What's he talking about, Chloe?" Kane rumbles, and at his request, my throat loosens, and the words pour out.

"I thought about building software that's going to take care of the problems most commonly encountered in the online market. Take online sales, for instance, and the demand-supply inconsistencies they face. The software can assist the manufacturers in controlling the supply rate and take inventory of goods produced, sold or defective."

Kane doesn't miss a beat, "And what about the consumers?"

I lift a shoulder, "They don’t need to worry about late deliveries or receiving defective items."

" Hmm," He nods once and crosses his arms over his broad chest, "Sounds plausibleanddoable."

Eric rushes over to him, giddiness written over his expression, "So, do you approve?"

My boss cocks his head to the side, regarding me with a look that suggests he knows something I don't.

"Of course," he affirms, "Brilliant ideas like that are the reason behind K-Synch." He straightens to his full height and begins walking back to his seat. "You'll have access to the resources needed to develop the idea."

I hear the incoming terms and conditions in his voice.

"And I would like to review and approve every step of the development of this software. You'll be working very closely with me from now on."

Chapter 4

Kane

Just One Taste

As I steer my car into the reserved spot in the parking lot, I resist the urge to rest my head against the steering wheel and fall asleep right there. The surprising event of yesterday took its toll on me by robbing me of sleep.

I tossed and turned throughout the night, thinking about Chloe with beautiful deep blue eyes and a warm smile. I still can't believe she has been right under my nose for the past three days, and I didn't even know it.

No wonder my attempts at finding her in other places proved futile.

By the time I was ready to sleep, the day had broken, and I had to drag myself out of bed to get ready for work. My head is pounding from the lack of sleep, and I want to turn around and head back home, but the thought of seeing Chloe far outweighs the relief of sleep right now.

I leave my car and enter the building, mumbling greetings to the people I pass. Before long, I get to my office and collapse into my chair, momentarily closing my eyes to ward off the headache.

I don’t know how much time has passed, but I sense someone shuffling into the office, and I know from the quiet footsteps that it's Mike.

"Please tell me you have an aspirin," I moan, rubbing a palm flat over my forehead.

My assistant snorts, "Last I checked, I'm not a doctor. Now here are some documents you need to..."

"Screw the documents, Mike," I complain, cracking an eye open to peep at him, "I need aspirin and water."

With a sigh of true patience, Mike reaches forward to pick up something from the table. My ears register the dull sounds of pills moving inside a bottle.

"Here you go," he hands the medication over to me, "I had them brought to your desk the moment I saw you walking into the office with puffy eyes."
