Tim’s eyes darken, and he grits at me, “If you do that, you’ll never hear from me again.”

Good riddance.

“Fine!” I bark, “I’ve had enough of your jealous tantrums, anyway.” I point behind him, “See that gate? Drive out of my property and never come back.”

I’m not going to lie. My already broken heart shatters again at the thought of my brother walking out of my life. But sometimes, I have to protect myself.

“You’ll always be my baby brother, Tim,” I tell him earnestly, “but don’t think I won’t cut you off if my happiness is on the line.”

I can see it in his eyes. We may become complete strangers after this, but I can’t continue to go on like this.

I need Chloe and Skye back.

Chapter 28

Chloe

My Knight In Shining Armor:

Five months later:

It’s been five months since I walked out of Kane’s office and left him with Tim. I miss him more with each passing day. Every time I think about him, I feel the pain from my broken heart. He left a huge hole in my heart.

I look down at my rounded, swollen belly the size of a honeydew and sigh, rubbing a hand over it. I wish he were here to witness his child’s growing.

I’ve found myself thinking back to that day in the office and how Kane was so insistent that everything was misunderstanding. Could it be that he was right? Was I in too much of a hurry to conclude without hearing him out first?

It would be so horrible if that were the case. But then, if he was so innocent, why didn’t he come after me when I was leaving?

I sigh again and try to focus on the computer in front of me. Months have passed, and life has moved on. For all I know, he could be dating another woman by now.

I have to forget him somehow.

It’s not going to be easy, especially when I have this baby to remind me of him every day for the rest of my life, but I must try.

My phone chimes with the incoming message notification, and I pick it up to see it’s a message from Sadie, my new employer. She’s telling me to come to her office as urgently as possible.

I wonder what caused her to call me into the office so urgently.

The last couple of weeks have been a wild ride for all of us at Sadie’s firm. We’re on the verge of a huge success with the launch of a new software I’ve spent months working on. But at the same time, we’ve been facing lots of challenges.

The most threatening of them all is the talk of us stealing the original idea from another company. Sadie won’t tell us the name of the firm leveling such outrageous accusations, but she did mention yesterday that the CEO of the company is scheduled to meet with her so they could clarify any concerns.

If she’s texting me now, she probably needs help convincing the other CEO. And since I'm the main developer of the program, my expertise would be necessary to dissuade the other person.

Heck, I’ll put up a show if I have to.

I stand up and grab my iPad before leaving my office. I speed walk to Sadie’s office and knock lightly on the door. She calls for me to come inside, and I do. My eyes are on the ground when I walk in, so I don’t notice the man sitting on the opposite end of Sadie until I’m closer to them.

Then I realize it’s him. Kane.

That full head of dark hair that I used to run my fingers through. His shoulders are bowed, but I still recognize them because I spent so many nights resting on them.

Wait. He’s the one complaining about my new software?

He lifts his gaze to mine, and the whole world seems to stop when he sees me.
