With that, she turns and rushes toward the door. I extend a hand, urging her to wait, to turn back and come into my arms.
In response to my silent plea, she pauses and slowly turns around. I notice that the cold fury in her eyes has shifted to a heartbreaking agony, making her look like a mere shell of herself. We lock eyes, our silent gaze conveying emotions that words fail to articulate.
I love you. Don’t leave like this, please.
She begins to speak, and her voice carries raw anguish, "I won't give you the satisfaction of kicking me out. I quit. And don't worry, you won't find me at your house anymore." Tears well up in her eyes, and when she blinks, they spill down her cheeks.
She wipes her arms across her face, attempting to clear the tears and sniffs. "Goodbye, Kane.
The room starts to blur in my vision, and I blink to clear the moisture from my eyes. In the brief moment my eyelids close and reopen, she vanishes through the door and out of my life.
Forever.
Chapter 26
Chloe
A New Life
As I run out of Kane’s office, my heart aches so much, and I can’t breathe. Tears blind my vision as I navigate my way back to my office. As soon as I enter the office, Eric and Luke who were laughing at something a moment ago, hastily rise from their seats, expressing concern at my visibly distressed state.
My team lead, or I should say my former team lead, reaches out to hold my face, looking over me in worry, “Hey! What’s the matter?”
I’m too choked up to speak, and even if I could speak, I still wouldn’t be able to share what just happened. I wouldn’t want them to find out about me and Kane.
I shake my head and bend over the table, packing up my things. Eric and Luke, ex-colleagues, hover behind me.
"Why are you taking all your stuff?" Luke questions in alarm, "Are you leaving?”
I don't answer; I'm too focused on putting all my belongings into my bag except my flash drive left in Kane's office.
Don’t think his name.
When I’m all packed and ready to leave, I turn back to look at them. “I quit,” I whisper, my voice trembling. Their expressions shift to shock, and I sense the questions forming in their minds.
“Don’t ask me the reason,” I tell them before they can bombard me with questions, “I just want you guys to know. It was so much fun working with you guys.”
I fix my eyes on Eric and start to tear up all over again. I won’t see his owlish face or deal with his emotional outbursts again. And I won’t listen to Luke’s outrageous gossip ever again.
My heart breaks into pieces at the thought of losing my work family, and before I know it, I embrace them in a joint hug. They hug me back tightly, and I hear Eric whisper into my ear, with a cracked voice, “We’ll miss you, Chloe.”
We let go of each other, and I give them one last sad smile before I turn around and leave the office.
I don’t remember the journey downstairs. I’m too busy wondering how I’ll survive from now on without seeing Kane or hearing his voice. At the reception, I turn in my staff ID and walk out through the main door. The minute I step outside, a mild breeze blows across the city, but to me, it might as well be a blizzard.
That’s how empty I am on the inside.
My teeth chatter, and I embrace myself to keep myself warm as I walk all the way to my car. As I open my car door, I sense eyes burning into the sides of my face, and I don’t have to look up to know who is watching me from his window.
The same guy who wouldn't hesitate to toss me aside for his precious brother.
Well, they’re free to mend their relationship and make all the nice memories they couldn’t make when they were younger. They’ll always have each other, and I will be soon forgotten.
I would be the woman who dated two brothers and got her heart broken by both of them.
I’m putting all my stuff into the trunk of my car for the third time in three months. This is reoccurring far too often to be just a coincidence. Maybe this is what my life is supposed to be—zero stability.
When I’m done piling up the remaining boxes and suitcases, I look up to the entrance of the mansion where Rosa and Cooper are watching me. Their faces are lined with sadness and confusion, and when I lift my hand to wave, Rosa leans into the chef’s embrace, sobbing.
