“What thefuckis going on here?!”

Chapter 21

Chloe

Surprise Birthday Gift

“What thefuckis going on here?!”

I gasp into Kane’s mouth as I hear Tim’s voice. And this time, it’s not out of pleasure. We jerk apart, and he nearly drops me in our hurry.

Tim is standing a couple of feet away, looking furious. His face is a bright, angry red, and the veins in his forehead are popping out. His eyes are filled with anger, staring at both of us.

“Let me guess. This is the reason you were so against me working here," his harsh, grating words are directed at Kane, "What was that again? 'I'll hire you but promise you'll stay away from Chloe,'" he spits, curling and uncurling his fists.

Kane swings an arm out to shield me from the brewing heat of the moment as he tries to speak, “Tim…”

“SHUT THE HELL UP!” Tim screams, pointing a trembling finger at his brother, “You made me promise to leave her alone so that you could have her!”

Tim’s voice is overwhelmingly loud, and it reverberates inside my skull and around the office, suddenly making the large room seem so small.

“She was mine first, you hear me? Mine! Do you think that just because we split up, it gives you the right to interfere with our lives? Why don’t you stick to doing what you do best? Stay the fuck away!”

Then he turns to me, and much of his anger recedes. “Chloe, I need you to listen to me. He’s just taking advantage of you. Of us. He doesn’t care about you or anyone else except himself.”

As he speaks, I huddle behind Kane even more. This version of Tim is completely unrecognizable. It’s like he has been replaced with someone else with rage and obsession. Someone who is much darker.

“Come on,” he stretches a hand to me, “Let’s go get our daughter and leave this city. We’ll go back to how we were before, and this time, nothing is going to separate us ever again.”

I shake my head vehemently, “I told you, I’ve moved on…”

He yells, “To him? He’s no good for you!”

Kane finally finds his voice, “That’s enough, Tim.” His tone is low and rumbling, and I instantly feel safe, “Can’t you see you’re scaring her?”

“Stay out of this!”

Kane explodes, “No, you stay out of this. What the fuck is wrong with you?”

“You!” Tim growls, “You’re a liar and a hypocrite. I thought relationships between staff were prohibited. Or was that also a lie? Was it a plot to help you get closer to her while pushing everyone else away?”

At this point, I’m sure everyone who is on the same floor can hear us. I pull my hair with both hands in frustration and wonder why this has to happen on today of all days?

Tim steps closer to his brother up to the point where they’re nose to nose. Tim is fifteen years younger, and he lacks the strength and sheer size that Kane has. Not to mention, he is several inches shorter. If they ever were to go physical, the fight would not be in his favor.

“Stand down,” Kane warns.

Tim scoffs bitterly, “Or what?”

The older brother says nothing for a second. Then, slowly, he raises a powerful fist to both their faces, warning, “Or I’ll make you.”

Nothing happens for a good minute. The tension in the room escalates further and further until the air is completely charged with the premonition of something that’s about to happen.

Then, faster than I can blink, Tim rears back and clocks Kane on the jaw.

I scream.

Kane subdues his brother, forcing his hands behind his back and snarling, “I can have you fired and thrown out right now for this, you know?”
