This dinner date has opened my eyes to what Kane went through as a young man. He’s intentional and holds everyone, including himself, to a standard. No wonder he’s such a successful CEO. But he also loves to have fun. Lots of fun.

I couldn’t have asked for a better uncle for Skye.

The relief on Kane’s face is noticeable, and he hurries to his feet, extending a hand to help me up. We finish our meals, and it’s time to leave.

“So,” Kane starts to talk when we’re back in his car, “we’re going to your friend’s place then?”

I turn to him in surprise, “You remembered.”

He flashes me a side smile that makes him look even sexier, “Of course I remember.”

As he pulls out of the parking lot, he asks, “Which way?”

I point him in the right direction, and he starts driving.

Some twenty minutes later, we arrive at Fiona's apartment building and head inside. I press the doorbell, and as we wait for her to get the door, I notice Kane’s fists are clamped together very tightly until his knuckles are bone white.

“Hey,” I reach out for his hands and try to get them to relax. He raises his head up to look at me, and I see the nervousness in his eyes. “She’s only two years old,” I try to calm his nerves, “She’s going to be so excited to see you. Just like I was.”

He doesn’t say anything. He just stares at me like he has never seen me before. He takes a step closer and asks, "What? You were excited to see me again when you first saw me in the office?”

Before I can reply with something witty, he closes the gap between us and presses his lips to mine. I let out a huge, calming sigh at the comforting taste of his lips and wrap my hands around his neck to bring us impossibly closer.

Just then, the door unlocks, and I leap away from Kane to meet Fiona’s shocked stare. Her eyes literally grow to consume half of her face, and I see the questions already brewing in her head.

Kane greets, “Hello, Fiona.” He extends out his hand for her to shake.

She turns to take his hand, with her biggest, most patronizing smile, “Hi!” Then she turns to me,” You didn’t tell me you were bringing a friend.”

A friend? She doesn't know. She's been working remotely as a freelancer for his company for a long time, but she never met Kane. No wonder she doesn’t recognize him right away.

I step in to make the introductions, “Kane, you already know Fiona. Fiona, this is…”

“SHUT UP!”

I wince at her volume. She’s now standing on her toes in her usual display of excitement, and she regards him with eyes full of stars. “Kane Simmons?”

Kane laughs and answers, “The one and only.” He looks a bit wary, and I have Fiona to thank for scaring him with her dramatic response.

She turns to me, gaping like a fish out of water.Oh dear. She looks like she could pass out at any moment.

I hold up a hand and try to help her make sense of the situation, “Let us in first.”

She opens the door wider, and we enter her cozy apartment. Almost immediately, I find my daughter seated on the sofa with her eyes glued to the kids' show on her tablet. The living room floor has stuffed animals scattered all over it. Fiona’s workstation is by the window. It has an office-grade desk, a gaming chair, two monitors, and a laptop.

“I’m so sorry for the mess,” Fiona rambles to Kane, “I didn’t know Chloe was bringing anyone along, much less you. I just can’t believe I’m finally meeting you in person.”

Kane answers, “It’s fine. We just came to pick up Skye and…I’m sorry if this sounds rude, but how do you know me?”

"She's one of your freelancers," I announce as I rush to pick up my daughter. As usual, Skye is happy to see me and gives me a huge wet kiss on the face as she squeals, “Mommy!”

“Yep,” Fiona continues, “I’ve been working for you for quite some time now.”

I’m not surprised Kane doesn’t know her. His company is big. It’s hard for him to know every single employee, much less a freelancer.

I hear the realization in Kane’s voice, “Huh. I’m glad to hear that you’ve been working for my company for a long time. It’s really nice to meet you, Fiona.”

I place my baby on my hip and coo at her, “Hey, girl. Guess what?”
