I’m holding her hand getting flashbacks of Jenny when she was in labor. The same look of concern is on the doctor’s face.
Despite being the one in labor, Amanda squeezes my hand. “Relax. Breathe. I’m going to be fine.”
After she signed the paperwork to adopt Andie, Amanda finally sold her house and officially moved in with us, but it’s only temporary. We’ve been designing a new house with Collin that he’s building for us. We want it to be cozy and perfect. My only stipulation was that Amanda’s studio be the greatest one ever built.
I’m obsessively twisting her engagement ring. Shewon’t marry me until after the baby comes, but she finally agreed to get engaged. It took me a while to fully win her back, but I did.
Once we got engaged and the pregnancy news broke, the press lost interest in us. Apparently happy families aren’t interesting. It was the greatest gift we could have asked for.
I try to calmly nod at Amanda even though I’ve spent the past month hiding my nightmares about this day from her. I’m so scared. I need her to make it through.
Dr. Crest looks at the nurse with alarmed eyes. “Prep the OR.”
I stand. “What’s happening?”
“There’s something off on these readouts. I don’t want to hold off. I want to get the baby out. Mr. Windsor, I’m sorry, we’re going to need you to wait outside. We don’t have time for you to get dressed and properly prepared for the OR.”
Oh my god. I point my finger at him. “Everything. You dofuckingeverything for her.”
“We’ve got this. Please, you’re holding us up. Let us do our job.”
A nurse escorts me to the waiting area where I find Jade, Collin, Declan, and Melissa. I had told Mom to keep Andie at home until we know everything is okay.
They all look up. Tears hit my eyes. “Something is wrong. They took her to the OR. They won’t let me come.”
Jade stands to sprint toward the OR, but Collin grabs her around the waist. “Babe, let them do their thing.”
Tears are streaming down her cheeks. I walk overto her and hug her. For the next thirty minutes, the longest of my life, she and I sit together crying. I’m not sure who’s comforting who.
The doctor eventually walks out and removes his mask. His face is stoic. I’m fucking terrified.
“Well, this has never happened before. I’ve read about it happening, but I’ve never personally seen it.”
My jaw is stiff as I ask, “Is she okay? Please tell me she’s okay.”
“She’s fine. She’s in a little bit of shock and asking for you, but she’s fine.”
I breathe out a sigh of relief.
Jade asks, “What about the baby?”
The doctor makes a weird face. “That’s the thing. There’s a technical term for it, but the everyday term is hidden twin. Sometimes one baby is sneaky and simply hiding behind the other in ultrasounds. Like I said, I’ve heard of it, but I’ve never seen it.” He mumbles to himself, “That explains the higher numbers in her original blood test.”
I pinch my eyebrows. “What exactly are you saying?”
“There were two babies in there. You have twin sons, Mr. Windsor.”
I hear Jade breathe, “Holy shit.”
I need to see Amanda. I need to make sure she’s really okay. “Can…can we see her? Them? All of them?”
He smiles. “Of course. Follow me, Mr. Windsor.”
I grab Jade’s hand. “She’s coming with me.”
The doctor nods and we make our way to Amanda. I walk in and see her holding one baby while a nurseholds the other. Amanda is covered by some big curtain from the waist down.
She turns and smiles when she sees me. Relief fills every ounce of me.
