Uncle Johnny laughs. “Take it easy, Rossi. She’s practically my niece.”
“I still don’t want you fucking touching her. She’s mine, and no one touches what’s mine.”
Uncle Johnny’s face gets serious, and he nods. “Understood.”
“Fuck me,” Dad says, pinching the bridge of his nose. “So it begins. I never thought my daughter would be married to my vengeful, psychotic Underboss. But here we are. Jenny girl, are you sure you can handle this one?” He asks, nodding at Kane.
Uncle Johnny laughs, but when Kane gives him a sharp look, he sobers up. We all walk into the living room and sit. Kane and I sit beside each other on the sofa across from Dad, but Johnny stays standing as he pours a drink at the bar. Kane briefly explains what we’ve been up to for the last couple of months and how he’s been tracking Jacob since we left but haven’t found anything.
“Doesn’t that seem weird?” I ask.
“What?” asks Dad.
“That we haven’t been able to find anything. Who could disappear like that and not leave a trace? You’d think he had help laying low for all this time.”
Kane, Johnny, and my dad share a look but don’t say anything. “No, Uh uh. What do those looks mean?” I grumble, not allowing them to keep me out of the loop.
“It would make sense that he was working with someone, or maybe for someone. That could be how we never found anything on him when you were in college,” Dad says.
“I agree. I figured it was because he was young, but now I wonder if Jacob is even his real name.”
“You think he used a fake name?” My skin starts to crawl just thinking about it. “Who is this guy?”
Kane shakes his head. “I don’t know, Love. But I’m going to find out. I'll contact one of my Army buddies and see if he can pull some strings.”
“If he is working with someone, the real question should be who,” Uncle Johnny adds. “Who would dare to go against you, Lorenzo? You’re the Mafia Boss of New Jersey. Who would put themselves in that kind of danger by playing the long game? Taking it further, why would they do this? What is their motive?”
“Yeah, Dad, who have you pissed off royally over the years?” I ask.
All the men share a look, and I roll my eyes at how secretive they’re being. “What if he’s dead? What if there isn’t anyone else? Would that be too much to hope for?”
Dad sighs and shakes his head. “We would have found him by now if that were the case.”
“He’s right. The absence of information is a big sign that something is going on,” Uncle Johnny agrees.
“Then we have to go with plan B,” I say.
“What the hell is plan B?” Dad snaps.
Chapter Sixteen
KANE
If this goes south,Perrelli is going to string me up by my balls and let his rottweilers Kim and Bo eat me alive. After discussing the details with Jennifer, Johnny, and Perrelli, we devised a plan we were all happy with. Okay, maybe happy is too big of a stretch. Jennifer wanted to be in on it, and I can’t say she’s wrong. If fuck face is coming after Perrelli, Jennifer is the perfect way to get to him. Announcing our marriage is likely to get his attention.
Pulling up to Oasis, the club Perrelli owns and is at most nights, I park in front of the valet and look at my sexy wife. “Ready for this, Angel?”
She bites her bottom lip, then shakes her head. “Yes?”
I grip her chin between two fingers and lean in close. “You look sexy as hell, Jennifer. What you should be worried about is me playing nice with every asshole who dares to look in your direction.”
“Kane, you don’t have anything to worry about,” She laughs. She has no idea how fucking beautiful she is.
An associate walks to my SUV and waits for me to open my door.
“It’s time,” I say more to myself than Jennifer.
“Let’s do this,” Jennifer says, holding out her fist to bump it against mine. She’s walking in here like she’s James Bond and I’m as equally turned on and pissed off to be here with her instead of at home in our bed. I fist bump my wife because how can I not? Then I open my door and step out into the crisp winter night.
