“Oh my God. Is she okay?”
“She’s doing better now, but they’re keeping her to run some more tests. I’ll explain everything when you get here.”
“I’m on the next flight out,” I spoke with panic.
“Addy, what happened?” Luis asked.
“My mom is in the hospital. She had a heart attack this morning.” Tears filled my eyes. “I have to get back to New York.”
“Go.” He hugged me tight. “Olivia and I can run the gallery just fine.”
“Thank you. I’ll keep you updated.”
The moment I climbed into the jeep, I pulled up flights to New York, and the only one available left in two hours, and it was at least a two-hour drive to the airport. I’d never make it. Out of desperation, I did something I never thought I would do.
“Adalyn?” Darren answered. “Is everything okay?”
“Darren, my mom had a heart attack this morning, and she’s in the hospital. The next flight out to New York leaves in two hours, and I’ll never make it in time.”
“Don’t say another word. I’m sending the company jet to you as we speak. It’ll be waiting for you in the airport’s private hangar.”
“Thank you, Darren.”
“You’re welcome. It’s the least I can do for you.”
I ended the call, drove home, and packed my suitcase. When I arrived at the airport, after hitting some heavy traffic on the way, Darren’s company plane had just arrived.
“It’s good to see you again, Adalyn,” Charles said as he extended his hand to her.
“Thank you, Charles. It’s good to see you.”
He took my bag and helped me onto the plane. Once I was seated, I sent a text message to Hannah.
“I’m on my way now. I should be there within a couple of hours.”
“Thank God. Mom is being unbearable and trying to leave.”
I couldn’t help but smile because that sounded like my mother. The plane finally landed, and I took a cab to Mount Sinai, where Hannah was waiting in the lobby.
“There you are.” Hannah smiled as we hugged.
“How’s Mom?”
“Being as stubborn as ever. The doctor said it was only a mild heart attack. Thank God Antonio can keep her calm.”
“Did you tell her I was coming?”
“No. And she specifically told me not to call you and that she would once she was released.”
The moment I stepped into the room, my mother took one look at me and threw her arms in the air.
“Adalyn, you didn’t have to come. I’m fine.”
“Hey, Antonio.” I smiled as I kissed his cheek.
“Hello, darling. Welcome back.”
“Mom.” I leaned over and kissed her cheek. “You had a mild heart attack. Did you really think Hannah wouldn’t call me?”
