“Yeah. Can you believe that? Apparently, she had a miscarriage, and he did it three days later. Then, they tried for a year and a half when he knew it would never happen.”
“That is disgusting. Who does that?”
“I know. Adalyn hates him, and I don’t blame her. I do, too. The way he hurt her makes me sick.”
“Sounds to me like you have a lot of feelings for her.” Katherine gave me a light smile.
“I do. And honestly, I think she’s so hurt and broken by what he’d done, I don’t stand a chance of ever having a relationship with her.”
“If you want my advice, just take things really slow. Don’t push, and don’t rush. She’s not going anywhere. Just be her friend and let nature take its course.”
“It’s kind of too late for that.” I sighed.
“What do you mean?” Her brows furrowed.
“We slept together last night.”
“Oh, shit, Colin. Why would you let that happen?”
“She initiated it.” I pointed at her. “I didn’t plan on it happening, but once she started it, I wasn’t going to stop it. I think I’m falling in love with her, sis.”
“Then you know what to do. Just give her time. If anyone can heal a woman’s broken heart, it’s you.” She kissed my cheek.
I grabbed my phone from the bar and sent Adalyn a text message.
“Good morning.”
“Good morning.”
“How about lunch today?”I asked her.
“I can’t. I have way too much work to do at the gallery. I’m sorry.”
“That’s okay. I totally understand. Have a good day, Adalyn.”
“You too, Colin.”
I sighed as I set my phone down. Why did I have a feeling that last night changed everything for us, and not for the better?
CHAPTER16
Adalyn
“Hello?” Annie’s voice filtered through the gallery.
I stepped out from behind the wall and greeted her.
“Hey, Annie. What brings you by?”
“I figured you’d be here. My, oh my, look at this place. The color on the walls is gorgeous—such a subtle gray. I love the darker gray accent wall. Addy, you did an amazing job,” she squealed.
“Thank you. I’m happy you like it.” I smiled.
“Anyway, I brought over the dessert menu for the opening.” She handed me a white piece of paper with writing on it. “Let me know what you think.”
I studied the list. Macarons, cookies, bite-size cheesecakes, lemon tartlets, chocolate tartlets, brownies, and miniature cream puffs topped the list.
“You’re going to make all this?” I asked with surprise.
