“Because we have something to tell you, darling.” Alfred took hold of Adalyn’s hand and led her to their table.
The four of us took a seat while I signaled for Katherine to get our drinks.
“I can’t believe you’re both here. What is going on? What do you have to tell me? And you’ve been here since last night and couldn’t call me?”
“Well, you’ll understand why in a minute. Since returning to New York, I couldn’t stop bragging about this phenomenal town and the gorgeous views. Alfred was so sick of hearing me talk about it that he decided he needed to see it for himself. Plus, I kept telling him there’s no way you can run the gallery by yourself. So, we flew in yesterday, and instantly, Alfred fell in love.”
“I did. It’s such a charming place, and I feel no stress when I’m here.” Alfred smiled.
“Okay, and?”
“We decided we’re moving here! So, I need a job. Know of any art galleries that are hiring?”
Adalyn was so excited, and I was happy her friends were moving here.
“You’re moving here? You’re serious?”
“Dead serious, darling,” Alfred spoke.
“What about your job?” she asked him.
“I can work from anywhere, but I will have to go back to New York for a day or two once a month.”
“Oh my gosh. I can’t believe this! And yes, Luis, I need you to come work with me.” She jumped up from her seat and hugged him.
“I know you do. That’s why I’m here.” He smiled.
“Did the two of you go look at that house?” I asked.
“What house?” Adalyn looked at Luis and Alfred.
“Colin told us last night that a house a few down from yours just went up for sale yesterday,” Luis said.
“So, Colin called his realtor friend and got us a showing this morning. We saw it, loved it, put in an offer, and it was accepted. It’ll be ready to move into next month!” Alfred smiled.
“I need to use the restroom,” Luis said.
“So, do I. We’ll be right back,” Alfred spoke.
Adalyn reached across the table and placed her hand on mine.
“Thank you for telling them about the house.” A beautiful smile crossed her lips.
“You’re welcome. The houses go fast here, so I didn’t want them to miss the opportunity. Besides, I knew how happy it would make you if they moved here. That’s all I want for you, Adalyn. I just want you to be happy.” I turned my hand over, interlaced our fingers, and gently squeezed her hand.
CHAPTER18
Adalyn
Annie stopped by as I stood in the kitchen, reviewing the final list of things to do for the gallery. Instead of letting herself in like she usually did, she knocked. I walked over to the door, and when I opened it, Annie stood there with swollen red eyes.
“Annie, what’s wrong?”
“Just that time of the month again. Anyway, here.” She handed me a small square tin. “I’ve been testing out some homemade chocolates filled with peanut butter, and I wanted your opinion. I thought maybe we could arrange a plate of them with the rest of the desserts at the gallery.”
I invited her in, opened the tin, took out a round-shaped piece of chocolate, and bit into it.
“Oh my goodness, Annie. This is so good.”
