“I’d like to ask you something.” I began abruptly.
“What would you like to ask?”
I couldn’t bring myself to speak a word for almost a minute. When I didn’t talk, Bella waved her hands in my face. “Are you all right?”
“Oh yes, I am. I’m just trying to remember the exact question… yes, I remember now…”
“How would you react to an unplanned pregnancy? How would you tell the father of the baby?”
Her face lit up, and she seemed too excited. “Don’t tell me you are pregnant?” She gasped.
“No! I’m not pregnant,” I said sternly. My face was void of any smile.
“All right. Thank goodness. I was starting to think you were the one…”
“No, I’m not. So, back to the question. What would you do if you found out you were pregnant? How would you tell him?”
“Well, I’d be so excited if he’s someone I like or love. I wouldn’t hesitate to tell him as well. It’s exciting news. There shouldn’t be any reason he wouldn’t be happy to hear.” She looked at me oddly while saying it.
“You’re right. I agree with you. What if you’re scared of how he’d react?”
“You shouldn’t be. As I said, it’s a joyous time. I don’t see any reason the man shouldn’t be happy you are carrying his child.” She looked weirdly at me. I immediately understood what it meant.
“I already told you I’m not the one. I’m only asking for a friend. She doesn’t know what to do about her unplanned pregnancy. The man isn’t exactly her boyfriend, although they seem to like each other.”
“You should tell your friend what I said,” she mumbled. Bella then strolled out of the car.
A deep breath sizzled through my mouth as I turned the car off, got out, and joined her at once.
We entered the building, silently taking the elevator to Roger’s floor. We stopped at my office, and I set my bag down. Not a single word was uttered by either of us. We waited until we got to Roger’s office, with various conversations running through our minds, but neither knew what the other was thinking.
I was still upset with Roger for pulling a fast one on me. I’d surely get my revenge on him one way or another. I glanced at Bella and again noticed the striking resemblance between her and Roger. It’d be difficult for anyone not to recognize them as siblings.
Strangely, he wasn’t in; it was silent and still like a graveyard. I turned towards the secretary, seated only a few inches away. Her head was buried in some work.
“Sorry to disturb you. Did Mr. Day mention where he was going?” I asked.
“No, he didn’t. I’m sure he didn’t go far, however. He should be back soon,” she muttered, continuing with her work. I took a deep breath and walked back to my space.
“He’s not in,” I said to Bella.
“Oh. I’ll wait for him in his office then.” She giggled. She walked off towards his office, and for a minute, I was glad to be rid of her. I sank into the chair, staring at the pile of work that allegedly required my attention.
I was about to start when the phone rang. “Can’t you all give me a break?” I yelled in a loud voice. It even drew the attention of the secretary. Well, I wasn’t sorry, and I wasn’t going to apologize.
“Mandy here. How may I help you?” I said in the calmest voice I could imagine.
“Hello, Miss Mandy. I’m calling from the front reception desk. Someone’s here insisting on seeing you. He says it’s very urgent.”
“To see me? Did he say who he is?” I asked. I was trying to understand why someone would look for me at work. I haven’t told a sole I am working here.
“He didn’t give his name. I asked him over and over again. It doesn’t seem like he’ll leave here anytime soon. I’d suggest you head down here at once.” The receptionist sounded firm and unfriendly. I couldn’t help but wonder what had suddenly come over her.
She was the least of my problems. I didn’t linger much thinking about it. I dashed out of the office and to reception as swiftly as possible.
Could it be a friend? Or my dad? I thought to myself. No, none of them made sense.
I arrived at the ground floor, shocked at the sight that greeted me. Standing in front of the receptionist was my ex-boyfriend, Kade.
