They nod at each other which I think is good, considering where we are.

“Hey, Paige. Can you come with me to get a coffee?” Haley asks.

I nod, kiss Travis on the cheek and head off with Haley.

“So that’sthe boyfriend you’ve been hiding all this time?” Haley asks.

“I wouldn’t say I have been hiding him, but yes, that’s him.”

“Do you think that’s wise?”

“What do you mean?”

“Isn’t he your boss?”

“Yeah, but don’t worry. It’s not like he’s taking advantage of me or anything. Everything is above board. We reported the relationship to HR and we try our best to not let it affect our work.”

“Yeah, I’m sure everything is fine now. I just worry because things could get very complicated.”

With everything that has been happening today, I totally forgot that I am pregnant. If only she knew just how complicated things already are, but I don’t tell her. This is neither the time nor the place for that conversation. Plus, given the reservations she’s just voiced I’m not entirely sure how she will receive that particular piece of news, and I can’t deal with a freak out right now.

“Yes, things can get complicated, but that’s life. Things are good with Travis and me right now, and I have chosen tofocus on that. I did say I wanted to put more effort into my romantic life. Things aren’t happening exactly how I had envisioned, but when does life ever turn out how we planned?”

She shrugs. “I guess you’re right. I just hope you know what you’re doing.”

I hope so too.

TRAVIS

The last few days have been rough. Although Paige’s mother was hospitalized for three days, she’s back home now resting.

I got to meet her and she is a lovely woman. She took a particular liking to me, unlike the rest of her family. She and I got on like a house on fire. She doesn’t seem to care much about our age difference or any of the other rational reasons why Paige and I shouldn’t be together. She’s just happy that her daughter is happy.

It makes me feel good that I have an ally in the family. Maybe with time she’ll convince the others.

I’m expecting a call from Paige so when my phone rings and I’m in the bathroom, I literally run to my bedside table to answer it. However, it’s not Paige. The name that flashes across the screen causes my spine to stiffen. I answer.

“Felicity?”

Why is my ex-wife calling me?

“Yes, Trav, it’s me,” her raspy voice hits me for the first time in two years.

“What—Why—?”

“Can I see you? There’s something I need to tell you.”

I’m silent for a moment before I say, “Um, sure…I suppose.”

“I can be at your place in 30 minutes.”

“You’re in New York?”

“Yes, I am.”

“Alright, then I guess I’ll see you soon.”
