Ava smiled. “That’s vivid.”
“Yeah. Some strange asshole that I have never met has killed me without me even speaking to him.” Myrtle sighed. “I am irritated.”
Nisha looked like she wanted to say something but kept her lips together. A lab tech came in to draw blood, and then a nurse arrived and untangled her as well as removing monitors and stickers. Myrtle was lightheaded, but when her friends helped her get dressed, she wanted nothing more than to get the hell out of there. If she had a limited amount of time, she was going to live it.
It was two in the morning when she finally managed to sneak out of the house. Nisha was asleep, and the evening check-ins had already been done. No one would be checking on her until seven. This was her time to feel alive again, just for a little while. Two weeks with her friends staring at her every minute, waiting for her to keel over, was a little wearing.
She drove to a café that she liked and knocked on the door, feeling relaxed in the smile of her occasional acquaintance. She was buzzed in, and her regular order was in front of her in under a minute.
“So, how are you doing?” Odette Rigel stood and smiled.
“Pretty good. Looks like your boyfriend has been by. You have a blush on your cheeks.”
Odette blushed. “Ah, yeah. He’s been pulling a lot of late nights, and I think our third is coming back to town soon. That will be fun.”
“Wait, so you are an omega?”
“I am one of the tall, pale ones. The Elite omega.”
“Oh, I have been seeing them online and on the news.” Myrtle tore her donut into pieces. “I don’t suppose you could show me?”
Odette grinned and grew a foot with pearlescent skin and pointy ears. Her white hair was wrapped in a ponytail.
“Oh. Wow. Can I touch your skin?”
Odette laughed and said, “Sure. It’s super soft when I am like this.”
Myrtle smiled and touched the back of Odette’s hand. To both of their astonishment, Myrtle shot up a foot and looked at her skin. “Oh, I amthatkind of an omega.”
Odette stared in shock. “You, too?”
“Yeah, but unlike you, my alpha didn’t want me. I am guessing that whoever he is, he has marked a mate somewhere.” Myrtle sighed. “So, whatever cosmic link has tied us together has torn a giant hole in me and will kill me in a few weeks. It was nice to see the real you, though.”
Odette paused and gripped her hand. Myrtle felt something odd. The pain eased, and she got stronger, if only for a moment.
“Let go of my hand, please.” Myrtle waited for the drained feeling to take over, and it did, but it was lighter.
Odette blinked. “You don’t know who your mate is?”
“Was. No. Never met him. I certainly haven’t attuned to him. I mean, from what I have researched, there has to be some kind of tuning to alphas.”
“So, what are you going to do?”
“There isn’t anything to do. The loss of a mate that was supposed to be mine hurts, and it’s draining me.”
“What about your second? Could you find him?”
Myrtle smiled. “I don’t know where to start. I would probably kill him if we got together. I grabbed hold of your energy with a light contact of hands. I don’t want to imagine what would happen if I had someone to myself. For all I know, he is feeling the same pain for losing his third.”
Odette frowned and blinked. “Whoa.”
“What?”
“You flickered but not a kind of flicker I have seen before.” Odette grabbed her phone, and her thumbs started tapping. She held her phone, and when she saw something Myrtle wasn’t keen on having captured, she took a picture. “I am pretty sure that Ark will be able to explain this.”
“Ark?”
“Ark Mayfield. He’s a lawyer, and while he works a lot of nights, he’s up and on his way here now. He’s one of my mates, but until our third shows himself, we are confining ourselves to making out and seeing how long it takes him to get me off, then a cuddle and a deep sigh, and he leaves.”
