Relief washes over me at the sound of his voice. “I assume you’re calling because you have something?”
“Right you are. When and where can we meet?”
“I’ll send you the address.”
“I’ll reply with an ETA.”
I hang up the phone, knowing it’s always best to keep our calls short and concise.
“Help me into my chair? I want to be part of this.”
I nod and climb out from under the blankets, but don’t help him to his chair just yet. Instead, I turn on my heels and lean back into him, pressing our lips together in a firm kiss.
His hand wraps around my head, pulling me in. Before I know it, I’m back on the bed straddling him.
Well, hopefully, Mac is at least an hour or so out.
Chapter 35
We arrive at the estate, and Alexi holds out his hand for my weapons again. I’m reluctant, but I give into him, keeping the ones around my ankles just in case. You can never be too careful.
The gate closes in the distance, and it squeaks in just the right pitch to make my knees nearly give out. It sounds so much like the door opening when Rostya would come in that my heart rate speeds up, and I have to hold onto the car for support.
I don’t close my eyes for fear of getting thrown into a flashback. Instead, I keep them open and looking down at the tire. Damien had the rims changed to a matte black that remindsme of Alexi’s guns. Those guns protect me.I am safe, I am in control.
Taking a deep breath, I stand up straight. All three of my men just saw what happened, but none of them comment. They know if I need help, I’ll ask for it.
The four of us walk in to find Lizz and Mac sitting on the couch with Havoc, his hair in a state of total disarray. My forehead scrunches with a question. When I see Arrow in a wheelchair next to the couch, his hair looking the same, pieces click together.
Then I wish they wouldn’t have because that’s not a mental picture I wanted. Shaking off the thought, I move to the couch. My guys join me just as Boris and Nessa come into the room with Laney.
It’s almost comical that this is my family now. They are always beside me as we have the hard conversations, and we all make decisions together. It feels amazing to have finally found my family.
I look at Mac, and he looks like he’s aged ten years since I saw him last. But he has that same sweet smile on his face that I truly love. He’s always been a bit older than the other men, only now the wrinkles around his eyes seem even more prominent and gray hairs now cover his head instead of being scattered like before.
“Hey, Mac,” I say with a smile.
“Hey there, little one. You’ve made quite a name for yourself since you’ve been gone.”
I laugh in response, because what else can I do?
“You could say that.” I clear my throat. “Why are you guys here?”
This time, I look at Lizz, who’s leaning back on the couch and cleaning her nails with a knife. Boris glares at her, but she justlifts her shoulder giving off an ‘I don’t give a fuck what you think’ vibe.Damn, I knew I loved her.
“We heard about the round table,” Mac says as I take a seat. “I have gathered up a few of the men we knew that were the good ones of the lot. You know most of them, but they couldn’t all risk coming out of hiding to be here today. “
“Alright, and what are you here for exactly?”
“To enlist with you, of course.” Mac spreads his arms out wide as if that was so obvious.
“With me?” I look at Alexi, immediately noticing he’s trying not to laugh, but I don’t understand why. “What do you mean to enlist with me?”
“Well, I have a group of thirty or so trained assassins who now need a new leader, and we’ve all agreed you’re their best bet.”
To say I am taken off guard is an understatement. In fact, I feel like I just got slapped in the face. Sure, I wanted to take down my uncle, but it wasn’t so that I could take over the league. I don’t even know if I want that.
Damien reaches out and places his hand on my knee. “I think our girl is in shock,” he says sarcastically and I slap his hand away.
