She tries to scratch her nose on her jacket, then gives up after a second.

“Anyway, we can only take one job at a time and can’t take another on the same group if we fail, so I guess I’m out. Pity really, although you seem kinda cool. Try not to die.”

Damien laughs. “I’m Damien, what do they want for me?”

“Oh, they want a brutal murder there with video evidence. You know, the whole nine. Not really my gig. I’m more of a kidnapper. Suits me better.”

I swear the two of them are from a different planet as they talk. She’s by far the easiest prisoner we have ever spoken to. Damien doesn’t have to lay a finger on her to learn that she really doesn’t know much. She was given a name and a mission that was paired with an amount willing to be paid.

My suspicion is, now that Rostya and Adrik got rid of Boris, they’re hiring out our hits so they can get back to work.

“LD, tell me this, why are you spilling all of this for us?”

She shrugs as much as she can in her bindings. “I’m a mercenary. I do jobs I am hired for, but no one gives me any more information than I really need to know. It’s quite simple, right?”

Damien nods as if he totally understands. He’s laying on his stomach now, his head propped under his fists as he kicks his legs like a little kid watching his first action movie. I don’t understand though.

I push off the wall and move to sit beside him, trying to look as relaxed as he does but likely failing. “What’s simple?” I ask, sounding bored.

They both look at me as if I totally missed the punchline to the joke, and for a moment, I feel stupid. Then I remember I’m talking to crazy people.

“Like she said, it’s simple,” Damien says, sitting up next to me and crossing his ankles. “She doesn't know anything, so why get tortured when she can just tell us her situation, then we can let her go.”

I bark a laugh at that. “We are not letting her go.”

Damien has the fucking audacity to look confused and ‘LD’ huffs in annoyance.

“She kidnapped Laney, and now she knows where our safehouse is. More so, she knows who we all areandwhere we are. What’s to stop her from taking that info to her boss or her coming back to end us all?”

Damien shakes his head, and I feel like I’ve stepped into an alternate reality where everything is upside down because they make no sense.

LD clears her throat and I look up.Oh my god, I just referred to her as LD in my head. I’m going insane.

“What stops me from doing that is I get nothing in return, dude. I had a job to take the blonde chick. I lost.” She sighs again, shaking her head as if she is disappointed in herself.

“I don’t know who picked me for the job. Even if I did, that’s not how we work. We get a job and then we pass or fail.”

“You don’t know the reason behind any of it?” I ask and she shakes her head.

“How do you know you aren’t sent to kill or hurt an innocent?”

She shrugs. “I don’t.”

“How do I know you won’t just come right back here and hurt Laney?”

“You don’t.”

A shot suddenly rings out, making me jump as I’m sprayed with blood right as Nessa, Lizz, and Mac walk in.

I turn back to see Alexi tucking his gun back into the holster. Damien looks furious, and Lev looks like he is trying to stay quiet.

“What the ever-loving fuck, Lex?” Damien barks.

“She gave us what she could. We cannot risk Laney being taken again or her finding a way to get paid for the information she collected here. You both were letting her convince you to let her go. That was not an option.”

I tilt my head back and groan.

“Why did you have to get me sprayed with blood in the process?” I walk over to him and wipe some of the blood on his white button-down. His jaw ticks as he grabs my wrist and pulls me flush against him.
