“This is a clusterfuck. I can’t believe this shit is happening.” Trick was pacing like a caged animal. “If Lindsey has our baby in this fucking jail, I’m going to go ape shit. Someone better be prepared to bail me out.”

Darren was feeling much the same way and Kylie wasn’t even his woman. Since she’d moved in, they’d grown really close. He’d been there when she was homeless and Taylor ruined her plans to move in with Tuck. He’d been there when she found out she was pregnant. He’d been there when she started having morning sickness and when she found Taylor naked and in bed with Tuck. He’d been there for all the ups and downs and he’d grown very protective of her. Imagining her sitting in a filthy jail cell turned his stomach and pissed him off. It had to be doubly worse for Trick.

“Here he comes,” Jackson announced as he spotted Ben returning.

“The officer I talked to said the chief called for the raid, saying there was probable cause. No one I spoke to knows what that is. It looks like the only ones to be brought in from the raid are a couple of drunks who needed to sleep it off and your people.”

“What the fuck?” Trick shook his head in disbelief.

“Are they under arrest?” Darren asked. If so, they were going to have to get their lawyer out of bed and get this straightened out. Fast.

“No. That’s the thing,” Ben scratched his head. “After they were all locked up, Chief texted one of the guys and said not to charge them. They were free to go when you all came for them.”

Trick’s head jerked back. “What was the purpose of that? None of this makes any sense.”

No, it didn’t. Darren agreed with Trick one hundred percent. Something about all this smelled funny. If he wasn’t in such a hurry to get Kylie out of here, he’d have thought about it more, trying to fit the puzzle pieces together. This being worried and out of sorts for a woman was new to him. He wasn’t sure he cared for the feeling.

“I’ll go get them.” Ben turned to go release their people.

Ten minutes later and all the old ladies, Cami, Jenna and the prospects were brought out and given their personal effects.

“Uh, I think you’re missing one,” Darren told Ben as he sorted through all the women.

“Which one?”

“Kylie Mason.”

Cutter worked his way over to them. “Race, Kylie’s not here. They separated us into different cars. They put Kylie in one by herself. I tried to get them to put me or Miles in there with her, but they wouldn’t have it. It looked like the chief was driving the car and he went the opposite way from the station.”

Darren pushed his way through until he was face to face with Cutter. “Kylie’s not here?”

“No, man.” Cutter shook his head. “I did everything I could to get to her. They cuffed me and Miles and threw us in the back of a car before they peeled Kylie from the group.”

“He’s right. He did try to get to Kylie. It was impossible.” Bellamy supported his claim. “Look at his face. They shoved him into the pavement.”

“Fuck. Tuck’s gonna lose it.” Jackson ran his hand through his hair.

“Where is he anyway? I thought I saw him earlier.” Trick pulled Lindsey into his arms.

“Taylor went into labor. He’s at the hospital.” Darren was done with talking. They needed to come up with a plan to get Kylie back. “You sure it was the chief that took her?”

“Yes,” Cutter said.

“Ben, do you have any way of getting in touch with the chief?” Darren asked.

“A couple of the guys have been trying to call his phone, but he’s not answering. Another one tried raising him on the radio and still no response.”

“Is there a low jack on his car?” Darren was grasping at straws.

“It depends. Was he in an RPD car?” Ben addressed Cutter.

“I don’t know. It was an unmarked car.”

An officer burst through the door at the back of the room, looking frazzled. “Ben, we just got a call. They’re saying Chief was found dead on the side of the road. He’s been shot.”

“Was there anyone in the car? A woman in the backseat he would have picked up at Bottoms Up?” Darren asked.

“No. No one else at the scene. We’re going out now to process the scene.”
