“I’ll wait out in the hall while you get dressed,” he told her, not giving her a chance to say anything.
Two doors down and on the opposite side of the hall, another doctor opened the door, smiling from ear to ear. “Congratulations! You’re pregnant! Oh shoot, I forgot my tablet. I’ll be right back.” He exited the room, leaving it part of the way open.
Taylor came out fully dressed, all smiles and happiness. He shouldn’t begrudge her for being excited about her baby. He would also like to be excited about the prospect of a baby, but until he knew for sure it was his, he felt like his life was on hold.
“I need to use the bathroom before we go and make another appointment.”
“That’s fine. I’ll wait for you outside.” He followed her down the hall and happened to glance in the room where the other doctor came out a moment ago, giving someone the news they were going to have a baby. He wondered what people, happy to be pregnant, looked like. His breath caught in his chest as he got a good look at the room’s occupants. “What the fuck?” he whispered.
Kylie sat on an exam table, her face white as a sheet, panic written all over her face. She didn’t see Tuck at the door, nor did the man standing awfully close to her with his hand on her shoulder. He was confused. He didn’t understand what he was seeing. Why was Kylie at the doctor’s office with Darren? Like a lightning bolt out of nowhere, he remembered what the doctor had said as he was going into the room. Kylie was pregnant?!
What the fuck?
He started walking down the hall, in desperate need of some air. He quickly cleared the waiting room, then the building, coming to a stop on the sidewalk outside the double doors. His hands clenched at his sides as he tried to make sense of what he’d seen. What did this mean? Was Kylie pregnant by Darren? Had they been fucking around behind his back? It would be convenient. She was living there. Tuck and Kylie had only been fucking a few weeks and he’d worn a condom every time.
The more he thought about it, the madder he got. He’d always thought Kylie to be the sweet, always out of reach, girl next door. Did he have it all wrong? Maybe she liked to fuck different men? Maybe when he’d been thinking they were exclusive, she hadn’t been?
“Hey. Kylie. Calm down. Everything is going to be fine. Just breathe.”
He spun at the sound of Darren’s voice. His brother pulled up short, stopping Kylie in her tracks with the hand he had on her bicep. Where Darren’s expression was less than pleased to see him, Kylie’s head shot up, her pale face shone with guilt.
He shook his head. “Gotta say, Kylie Jo. Never took you as a cheating bitch.”
“What?” Her head jerked back like he’d slapped her, her voice sounding breathless. Darren growled in warning. “Brother.”
“I expected something like this from Taylor, but never thought you would do the same thing,” he directed at Kylie before his gaze swiveled to Darren. God, he felt like such a chump. He and Darren had shared women over the years. Everyone at the club had at one time or another. He thought everyone knew Kylie was different and he had no plans to share her with anyone.
“The same thing?” she asked weakly, leaning into Darren more.
“Yeah. Cheat on me. Did you have to do it with my brother? You could have found someone else. Anyone else. Isn’t that what you asked me?” Tuck could see the effect his words were having on her, but didn’t seem to have the ability to stop.
“That’s enough, brother. You don’t know what you’re talking about.” Darren slipped an arm around Kylie’s shoulders, pulling her closer into his side, further infuriating Tuck.
Taylor came out and joined the group, immediately feeling the tension. She slipped her hand, through his arm, holding onto his bicep. Any other time, he’d have shook her off and put space between them. Right now, he was too steeped in his anger to pay attention to what she was doing.
“What’s going on?” she asked.
“Nothing.” Tuck didn’t want to discuss this in front of Taylor. She’d consider it a way to get more than her foot in the door.
“Wait a minute.” Taylor put everything together at lightning speed. “You’re here because you’re pregnant? By him?” She laughed. “What a self-righteous bitch you turned out to be.”
Tuck didn’t like her talking about Kylie like that even if it was true. He should have told her to shut up or corrected her, but his heart was hurting. All he could do was hold Kylie’s gaze and mourn what could have been. Tears pooled in her eyes and he had to fortify his will not to rush to her, take her in his arms and tell her everything was going to be okay. But he couldn’t. She was having his brother’s baby and any future he might have imagined with her was gone.
“Were you going to try and pass the baby off as Tuck’s?” Taylor kept at her.
It broke his heart to watch silent tears slip down her cheeks and it only confirmed what he believed when she didn’t try to defend herself.
“What? Don’t you have anything to say for yourself?” Taylor was like a dog with a bone.
“That’s enough out of you, bitch.” Darren stepped in and pointed his finger at her. “And I expected better from you, brother.” He turned Kylie toward the parking lot. “Let’s go home.”
Darren thought better of him? What the fuck was that supposed to mean? He was the one who knocked up Kylie.
“Aren’t you going to defend me?” Taylor whined.
“Shut the fuck up and get in the truck.” Tuck wasn’t in the mood to deal with Taylor right now. She’d be better off if she kept to herself. Of course, that wasn’t her style.
“Can we go by the store and look a cribs? We need a car seat to bring the baby home. We’re cutting it close, waiting this long.”
